Kuzhi - Pit; Kal - Stone
Generally all the Siththars to grind the medicines, to tie rasamani, to clean mercury, to pure the herbs.. for all these they have used kalvam. Agathiyar describes about how that kalvam should be.
"வாறான குழிக்கல்லின் மார்க்கங் கேளாய்
vaaraana kuzhikkalllin maarkkang kaelaai
மைந்தனே பிரம்மாவின் சிரசுபோல
mainthanae brahmaavin sirasupoal
கூரான கலமணி விரல்மு ப்பத்துங்
kooraana kalamani viralmu ppaththung
கொள்கையாம் கலமணி விரல்நா ல்பத்து
kolkaiyaam kalamani viralnaa lpaththu
வீறானவி ளம்பதுதான் விரலிரண்டு
veeraanavi lambathuthaan viralirandu
விதியிலேயா ழமதுவி ரலிரண்டு
vithiyilaeyaa zhamthuvi ralirandu
போறானயி ருபுறமும் மூக்குமாகும்
poaraanayi rupuramum mookkumaagum
பெரிதான குழவியைத்தான் பேசுவேனே
perithaana kuzhuviyaiththaan paesuvaenae"
"பேசுகிறேன் பதினாறு விரற்கடை நீளம்
paesukiraen pathinaaru virarkidai neelam
பெரிது முகவட்ட மணிவிரல் நால்வீதி

ஆககா நேரடி விரற்கடை பத்தாம்
aakkaa naeradi virarkadai paththaam
ஆவுடையும் சிவலிங்கமும் ஆனவாறு
aavudaiyum sivalingamum aanavaaru"
The stone should be like Brahma's head, width 30'', length 40", the edge should be 2'', both the sides of this stone should be sharp (as shown in the figure) says Agathiyar. He also adds about the big roller, that it should be 16'' length, and the handle should be 4" and the grinding part should be 10" in size and says that it resembles Aavudai and Siva lingam.
*Kalvam - It is kind of roller, which was made out of stone, used by Siththars for grinding
