How to sleep?

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

Sleeping is basically an essential thing for better human health. One third of a day, we people normally spent in sleeping. Even, nowadays science also imposes the necessity of deep sleep. Sleep gives rest and peace for body and mind.

Siththars gave plenteous information about sleep. Even though, it is an essential activity in human life,  sithars mainly denoted sleep as the focused mind and the relaxed body. It is the form of sleepless sleep. Pathirakiriyaar denoted this stage as follows:

ஆங்காரம் உள்ளடக்கி ஐம்புலனை சுட்டறுத்து
aangaaram ulladakki aimpulanai suttaruththu
thoongaamal thoongi sukam peruvathu ekkaalam?

Sleepless sleep is the highest awaken state which is embedded with energy from cosmos. Moreover Siththars poem have a note that, breathe get wasted during our sleep. Agathiyar in one of his poem told that, one should not waste breathe during eating, intercourse and sleeping. The sleepless sleep told by Siththars is high blissful state and can be attained by any person with dedication and focus.

Siththars poem also has following quotes that, one should lessen their sleeping time even during the yoga practice. That too, sleep during day time is not entertained. How to sleep at night? Theriyar explained that trick in his book  “Maruthuva Kaaviyam” as follows:

பாரப்பா சிவயோகம் பண்ணும்பேர்க்கு
paarappaa sivayogam pannumpaerkku
parivaaka niththirathaan vaendaamappaa
naerappaa raakkaala niththiraithaanpanna
nilayaagach sootchamonru nikazththuraenkael
vaarappa varisaiyaaik kaalthaanneeti
vakaiyaaka niththiraithaan pannavaendaam
oarappaa orupakka maakachaainthu
uththamanae maerkaiyai maerkkolvaaye

kollappaa onrinmael saainthukondu
kurippaa nithhtirai seithuneenga
allappaa ashtaanga yogampaaru
appanae sivayogam vaasiyogam
nallappaa piranaaya mounayogam
nalamaana kavunaththin yogampaaru
vallapaa vaasiyathu keezhnoakkaathu
vakaiyaaka maenoakki yaerumpaarae.

We should not sleep by keeping the body upward as we do normally. We should practice sleeping like by keeping the body sideways by keeping the hand underneath the head which makes the vaasi (breathe) to move upward and not downward. This sleeping practice helps to achieve the following easily; siva yoga, vaasi yoga, pranayama, mouna yoga, kevuna yoga.

Readers may find a doubt that is this practice possible in this mechanical hasty world? Irrespective of discussing the possibility and impossibility of sleeping practice that is discussed above, this post generally aimed to put forth the information given by Siththars and ancestors to this generation.

Guru obeisance – Appearance of guru

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

This is the most important of the series guru obeisance.

The one who does with pure soul and does without any expectation only can practise this. Those who practise with any other wrong intentions will surely leads to failure. The Siththars are the one who have been rid of all the family pleasures. They do not expect divine service or worship. They do not accept it also. But even today many of them tell that the practice of doing poojas by chanting the 1008 mantra is meant for the Siththars only.

Now let us see the method of praying to them.

In a room filled with purity and silence facing the east keep the picture of the Siththar you pray and keep a lamp in front of it. In a clean cup filled with water, keep it in front of it. Also keep a copper coin of 3mm thickness and 1 inch circumference in front of it.

Now spread a cloth in front of the Siththar’s photo and sit in the pose of padmasanam. Those who feel difficult to sit in that pose can sit normally. Relax the breath, body and remain in a state of silence. At this point I wish to remind about the moola mantra (respective to the Siththar in the photo) and chant it for 1008 times in mind only. This has to be done during the sunrise and sunset everyday.

In this pooja, certain things should be done with proper discipline. Every time before the start of the pooja the water in the cup should be filled freshly. At any cost praying by keeping fruits, flowers or any other food items should not be done. Also remember that the Siththars do not encourage the idol form of worship.

In this way whoever does the guru obesiance with lot of interest and pure soul they will get the blessing of the guru they worship at the earliest. Based on the severity of our attempt that Siththar will appear to us.

Those who really seek for the blessing of the guru for them this particlar method is a chance.

So far we have seen about the way of offering our prayers to the guru, in the further posts we shall see the gods the Siththars has worshipped.

Guru obeisance? Siththar obeisance?

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

Is the Guru Obeisance and Siththar obeisance the same? One of our friends asked this question through an e-mail. After giving certain explanations for it, we shall proceed with our series of our guru obeisance.

When a child newly starts the guru kulavasam (residing in Guru's place for learning), the guru teaches the Siththar obeisance mantra to the child. “Hari namoathu sindham” is the Siththar obeisance mantra. This tradition was strictly followed till the previous generation. Now as days passed this tradition has disappeared. Apart from this, I think there is no relation between the Siththar genetics and Siththar obeisance.

To be even clearer, there are evidences that this Siththar obeisance is a practice of the Jains tradition.  Thiruththakka devar in his book, 'Seevaka sindhamani', he has written the following Siththar obeisance as the prayer song in the very beginning of the book iself.

"மூவா முதலா உலகம் ஒரு மூன்றும் ஏத்தத்
moova muthalaa ulagam oru moonrum aeththath
thaavaatha inbam thalai aayathu thannini eithi
oavaathu ninra kunaththu ol nithich selvan enba
thevaathi thevan avan sevadi saerthum anrae"

Hence this Siththar obeisance is no way related to the guru obeisance that we are looking right now.

So now let us switch into our topic that we were discussing.

The Siththars important mantras that I have mentioned in the last post serves as the tricks that help out the disciples to keep them connected with their guru always. By chanting that mantra at the beginning of any action, they believe that they always have the blessings and support of their guru in whatever they do and also they believe that their guru would appear in front of them whenever they need their help.

I guess you are surprised. Yes, the Siththars who have attained samadhi could appear in front of their disciples if needed. In the next post I shall share the method of seeing the Siththars in person.

Keep waiting!!

Guru Obeisance – A clarification

Author: தோழி / Labels:

The genetics of the Siththars is based on the guru and the disciple tradition. Here the guru is only superior to everyone and considered equivalent to god and are being worshipped. Bowing to guru and following his path is considered as the best practice. Whoever wanted to know about this tradition they must definitely know about the way of worshipping the guru.

Siththars when they start with something or put forth an attempt to something new, they make it a point that they offer prayers to their guru. Every disciple has got his own way of offering prayers to his guru or his own set of mantras to meditate on the name of his guru. Though we do not know about the greatness or importance of it, we can know the reason behind it through a guru.

What is 'Ettirandu'?

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Ettirandu = Ettu (Eight) + Irandu (two)

Everybody who is practicing the yogic wisdom must definitely know what this ettirandu is. Right from the start to end, for everything this ettirandu is like the basic thing. In all the things in the world, this ettirandu is filled in such a way that it cannot be separated from them. The one who knows its greatness only can be beneficent from all the secrets of the Siththars.

Almost all the Siththars have told the greatness of it.

"எட்டிரண்டு அறிந்தோர்க்கு இடர் இல்லை
ettirandu arinthoarkku idar illai"

ettumirandaiyum oraththu marai ellaam
unakkullae aegamaai thaernthu
vetta veliyinaich saarnthu - aanantha
vellaththil moozhgi migu kali koornthu

"எட்டும் இரெண்டும் இனிதறிகின்றலர்
ettum irendum initharikinralar
ettum irendum ariyaatha eazhaiyar
ettum irendum irumoonru naankenap
pattathu siththaantha sanmaarkka paathamae!"

So what is this ettirandu?

Before the English numbers came into practice, the Tamil script only was used to denote the numbers. In that the number eight (ettu) was denote by the Tamil letter Aah(அ) and two (rendu) is denoted by ‘Voo’ (உ). Both these ‘aah’ and ‘voo’ are the vowel letters which the Siththars have wrote with a hidden meaning as ettirandu in their songs.

Why did Siththars give so much importance to it but still sang it with indirect meaning?

All the sounds in the nature has got these two ‘Aah’ and ‘Voo’ as the fundamental sound. Everything has been emerged from this sonly. These two sounds are hidden in all Vedas, music, mantras, yantras and magical spells.

Those who really know the greatness and importance can only attain the wisdom. Only because they knew its importance they have given it with a hidden meaning.

The one who knew the real meaning, greatness and importance of this ettirandu are great people. There is nothing wrong to follow their path.

Let us know the truth and attain wisdom!!

I shall catch you in the next post with another information.

One letter Mantra - Continuation

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

The pranava mantra "OM" , this one letter mantra is as a dumb letter, says Konganavar.

Sivavaakkiyar says "one among the five letters" as a clue i.e., one letter from this five letter word 'na ma si vaa ya'

Thirumoolar says that "Nayottu mantra namanai vellum" which means the mantra used to make the dog run away which wins the yama. How we make the dog run away?

"Sieei"....!

Yes, the one letter mantra told by the Siththars with the hidden meaning is the letter "Si".This is said as "Si" kaaram.

Why did Konganavar said that the "Si" is silent letter in the "OM" mantra?

The explanation for this is given in the following song by Sivavaakkiyar.

"அகாரம் என்னும் அகரத்தில் அவ்வு வந்துதித்ததா?
agaaram ennum agaraththil avvu vanthuthiththaa?
ugaaram ennum agaraththil uvvu vanthuthiththaa?
agaramum ugaaramum sigaaraminri ninrathaa?
vigaaramatra yogikal virinthuraikka vaenumae?"

The agaaram "aah" , ugaaram "voo", sikaaram "Si" without this it ca not be united. Only yogi can explain how it could be possible. This information is being shared only through the gurus. This is also called as Guru's advice.

In the next post we shall meet with another useful information.

One letter Mantra

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Yes, mantra made of only one letter. How many of us know about this surprising one letter mantra? Hence I am writing this post.

This mantra is also called as "unspoken mantra", "Dumb letter", "Letter of heart", "Silent letter", "Nayottu mantra" in so many songs of the Siththars.

Konganavar says about this one letter mantra in the following way.

"ஓம் என்ற அட்சரம் தானுமுண்டு அதற்குள் ஊமை எழுத்தும் இருக்குதடி
oam enra atcharam thaanumundu atharkul oomai ezhuththum irukkuthadi"

Thirumoolar says the following as Nayottu mantra

"நாயோட்டு மந்திரம் நமனை வெல்லும் என்பரே
naayoattu manthiram namanai vellum enbarae
naayoattu manthiram innaaikku miga uganthathae
naayoattu manthiram naayaenyaan vittilaen
naayoattu manthiram in naayai veedu saerkkumae!"

(Thirumoolar)

Sivavaakkiyar says about this one letter mantra in the following way

"அஞ்செழுத்தில் ஒரேழுத்து அறிந்து சொல்ல வல்லிரேல்
anjezhuththil orezhuththu arinthu solla vallirael"

In another song Siva vakkiyar says about this one letter mantra in the following way

"அகாரம் என்னும் அகரத்தில் அவ்வு வந்துதித்ததா?
agaaram ennum agaraththil avvu vanthuthiththathaa?
ugaaram ennum agaraththil uvvu vanthuthiththathaa?
agaramum ugaaramum sigaaraminri ninrathaa?
vigaaramatra yogikal virinthuraikka vaenumae?"

Vallalar says about this one letter mantra in the following way.

"ஒரேழுத் தில் ஐந்துண்டென்பார் வெண்ணிலாவே -அது
orezhuth thil ainthundenbaar vennilaavae - athu
oomai ezhuththaavathenna vennilaavae"

Agathiyar says about this one letter mantra in the following way.

egamaenum orezhuththin payanaip paarththae
eduththuraikka ivvulagil evarumillai
aagamangal noolkal pala katruk kondae
arinthomaenbar mounaththai avanai neeyum
vaegaach saagaatha kalai kaal virainthu kaelaai
viduththa athanai uraippavanae aasaanaagum
thaegamathil ozezhuththai kaanbavan gnani
thirunadanam kaana muththi siththiyaamae!"

What is that one letter mantra that has got so much of greatness?

We shall see that information in the next post.

Mantra Yoga - "Panchathasaatchari"

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

In the episode of the mantras, in the list of mantras told so far the most special and the mantra told by the Siththars to their disciples in a secret way is the panchathasaatchari mantra. I will share certain information about it in this post.

As this mantra consists of fifteen letters it is told as panchathasaatchari mantra.

This mantra is being told only through the gurus. The Siththars have also told it in their songs with the actual meaning hidden in it.

"சுகாராதியோ ரைந்துங் கானிய பொன்மை
sugaaraathiyoa rainthung kaaniya ponmai
agaraathi yoaraa raththamae poalum vaakpavam
sagaraathi yoar naankum thaan suththa venmai
sugaaraathi mooviththai kaaviya muththiyae"

(Thirumoolar)

says Thirumoolar in his Thirumanthiram.

Five Sugaraathi:- ka, ae, ee, la, hreem
Six Agaraathi:- ae, ha, Sa, ka, ka, hreem
Four Sagaraathi:- Sa, ka, la, hreem

The three tricks refers to three halls. They are Vakbava hall, Kaamaraja hall, Sakthi hall. These three halls are represented by three colours. Those are gold, red and white respectively says Thirumoolar.

With these letters only the panchatha saatchari mantra is formed. Those who chant this mantra or worship it through the Bhuvaneshwari chakra, they could attain whatever they pray and also attain ashta maha siddhis says Agathiyar. But he also had sung this song with the meaning hidden in it only.

Those who have got the blessings of the guru, and attempts to search with hope could only find this mantra. I also cannot share it right now, hope you can understand my situation.

The greatness of this mantra is told is also said in Aanandha Lahari.

With this I shall wind up the series of mantra yoga. I will try to share about it in another situation.

In the next coming posts I shall share the information about the Alchemy told by the Siththars. In that I shall also share my own experiences.

Mantra Yoga - "Sakthi Beejam"

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

Worshipping to the mother or the sakthi is the ancient and powerful way of worship. Such a powerful mantra is the "Hreem" mantra i.e., the Beeja mantra says Thirumoolar.

Like the pranava mantra this "Hreem" mantra also has a great speciality.

"ஓங்காரி யென்பா ளவளொரு பெண்பிள்ளை
oangaari yenpaa lavaloru penpillai
neengaatha pachchai niraththai yudaiyaval
aangaari yaagiyae aivaraip petritu
 reengaarath thullae yiniththi runthaalae"

(Thirumoolar)

The devi in green color, in the form of pranava when she attempted to create the operations of the pancha krithyam*,  she created Sadhaasivaa, Maheswaran, Rudhran, Vishnu, Brahma as her own feature and after this she appeared in the"Hreem" beejam says Thirumoolar.

"ih+ir+ee+im = Hreem" refers to siva beejam, agni beejam, maha maya, pure maya. It is the form of the Easwari of the world i.e., Bhuvaneswari.

The "Hreem" mantra has to be kept in mind and without diverting the mind and with full concentration,  we could realise the present, past, future and win the death and could live immortal says Thirumoolar.

He also adds that while chanting this "Hreem" mantra the word "ih" in , "ir" in heart, "ee" in between the eyebrows and "im" in head has to be meditated. If it does done like this then the the Ashta Maha Siddhi could be attained.

Hence for the worship of goddess this "Hreem" mantra is most suitable and most honourable. You can get the guidance through a guru and get benefited.

In the next post we shall see about the panchathasaatchari mantra that has been maintained as a secret by the Siththars.

(Thirumoolar)

says Thirumoolar about the greatness of panchatcharam.

Mantra Yoga - "Pranavam"

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

In the previous post, we have seen that the "OM" mantra is the pranava mantra. We shall see the meaning of the 'OM' mantra in this post.

The pranava mantra "OM" has to be added in the beginning of any other mantra and chanted.

It is also called as thaaraka mantra and pranavam. The thaaraka mantra means the one that makes you cross something. Ship has thaarakam as another name for the reason that it hepls us to cross the ocean. Like wise the mantra is considered as pranavam mantra as it helps to cross the ocean of life.

The word Pranavam means pra - Universe, na - no, va - for you, means your relationship with the world will be cut if we chant the mantra.

All the vedas have been originated from the "OM" mantra. Hence whoever chants this mantra would get the benefit of chanting all the mantras.

In kaasikandam, it is said that Brahma has got that position of brahma only after chanting the "OM" mantra. In kandhapuranam, it is told that when Brahma was unable to tell the meaning of this pranava mantra he was put in jail by Lord Muruga. Then Muruga has taught the meaning of the pranava mantra to Lord Siva also and thereby he got the name Swaminaadhar.

For the earthly creations and its protection, the small drum in the hand of Lord Siva and the conch in Vishnu's hand named as Paanja sanyam keep making the sounds of "OM" mantra.

This thaaraka mantra is called as Panchatcharam by Saivites and Sutchuma sadatcharam by Vaishnavites. The siththars have also stressed about the importance of this "OM" mantra.

"ஓங்காரத் துள்ளே உதித்த ஐம் பூதங்கள்
oangaarath thullae uthiththa aim poothangal
oangaarath thullae uthiththa saraasaram
oangaarath theethaththu uyir moonrum utrana
oangaara seeva parasiva roobamae!"

says Thirumoolar about the greatness of OM mantra.

In the order of mantras, next we shall see about the Panchatcharam.

Mantra Yoga

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Our ancestors have taught so many ways to worship god. The way of worshipping that has become most familiar is the idol worship.

The way of worshipping god by means of words i.e., by arousing the words and praying them is known as Chakra form of worship. May be this is not a familiar method of worship but it is a very powerful method of worship.

In this chakra form of worship, Sri chakra, Thiru ambala Chakra, Bhuvanapathy Chakra, Saambavi mandala Chakra, Navaangari Chakra, Neela kanda Chakra all these are most powerful and special chakras.

The other form is the Mantra yoga. In this, the god is worshipped in the form of sound, by chanting mantras.

Mantra means the stength mind or protect the one who chants.

"Yoga" means uniting the soul into the god.

"Mantra Yoga" means the one who chants mantras with full of dedication will be protected and be united into god.

Out of these mantras, 'OM' is the primary one also called as pranava mantra and considered as the important and most powerful, hence it has to be added at the begining of any mantra that we chant.

This is called as Thaaraka Mantra. We shall see the reason in the next post.
