The trick that turns enemy into friend

The Siththars prefer a smooth life without enemies. We can find many songs where they stress that though one causes bad to us, we should in turn do well to them. Agathiyar narrates a trick in the following song that turns enemy into friend.

The following song is present in the book “Agathiyar maanthreega kaaviyam”.

"யெட்டான நகாரமுதை யகாரமான
yettaana nakaaramuthai yakaaramaana
இனிதான யிலைகளோ வில்வமாகும்
inithaana yilaikaloa vilvamaakum
நலமான செந்துகிலுடன் கிழக்குமூலை
nalamaana senthukiludan kizhakkumoolai
முளகுசிவ மாம்பலகை முன்னூற்றெட்டு
mulakusiva maampalakai munnoorrettu
தட்டாதே யுருவேற்றி யெதிரிபேரை
thattaathae yuruvaetri yethiripaerai
தானெழுதி யுன்பேரை மேலாகமாற்றி
thaanezhuthi yunpaerai maelaakamaatri
கட்டாகத் தகடெழுதி கையிற்கொண்டால்
kattaakath thagadezhuthi kaiyirkondaal
கடும்பகைவன் கேள்வானாம் கண்ணிற்காணே
kadumpakaivan kaelvaanaam kannirkaanae"

Take a copper sheet of 2” x 2” size and write your name on it. Below that write the name of the enemy whom you wanted to be your friend. Wear attire in red color and be seated on a wooden plank made out of mango tree facing east direction and place the sheet in front of you. 

Chant “Namasivaya” and drop a pepper and the leaf of vilva tree on to the sheet. After doing like this if you keep that sheet in your hand, the most dangerous enemy will also become your friend says Agathiyar.

Screen of snow! Screen of mind

The human mind is a collection of experiences. These spread all over our memory and try to control us. The conflict of these experience between the two extremes, good and bad, is what we assume as concience. This conscience only rule our thoughts, actions and ideas.

The one with clear thoughts remains as the best person and the one with confused thoughts remains as the loser. Though the mind is responsible for the growth or fall of an individual, the reason behind it lies in the above mentioned experiences. 

Paambaatti Siththar explains the same in a simpler way in the following song.

"சூரியனைக் கணட பனி தூர ஓடல்போல்
sooriyanaik kanda pani thoora oadalpoal
சொந்த பந்தஞ் சிந்தபரி சத்த தலத்தில்
sontha panthanj sinthapari saththa thalaththil
சூரியனைக் கண்டுதரி சித்தே அன்புடன்
sooriyanaik kanduthari siththae anbudan
அகலாமல் பற்றித் தொர்டந்து ஆடாய் பாம்பே!
akalaamal patrith thrdanthu aadaai paambae!

Snow is thicker like smoke. Through that anything cannot be seen clearly. This is known as the snow screen. But this screen of snow will disappear when the sunlight appears.

Our mind is surrounded by desires and illusions. We have to realize the Supreme Being in mind and get rid of all the desires and get away from illusions, like the snow that gets disappeared due to the sun light.

Like the snow that gets disappeared due to the sunlight, the mind should also realize the Supreme Being and get rid of the virtual screen that surrounds the mind says Paambaatti Siththar.

Tree with fruits

There is nobody beyond comments. Everyone is being subjected to reviews and criticisms at some point of time. The consequences can be listed such as it impacts on your mind or on our body. Paambaatti Siththar has explained how the people with pure heart resolve these issues in the following song.

"காய்த்தமரம் அது மிகக் கல்லடி படும்
kaaiththamaram athu mikak kalladi padum
கன்மவினை கொண்டகாயம் தண்டனை பெறும்
kanmavinai kondakaayam thandanai perum
வாய்த்த தவம் உடையவர் வாழ்பவர் என்றே
vaaiththa thavam udaiyavar vaazhbavar enrae
வஸ்துத் திருவடி தொழுது ஆடாய் பாம்பே!
vasthuth thiruvadi thozhuthu aadaai paambae!”

 It is believed that the tree with fruits will be punished by hitting with stones. It means that the tree which has got nice flowers and fruits on it will be hit with stones to get that fruits.

Likewise those with the blessings of guru and attempting to realise themselves may also need to face punishments and protests. Also the people with pure heart serving the society and serving the god are no exceptions for this. The sorrows can cause nothing to these people. He says that they will be in a higher state where they are clear about all these issues.

The tree which is being hit by the stones even after getting hit continues to give fruits. Likewise the saints and sages who face all these problems will also continue to shower their blessings says Paambatti Siththar.

Which is joy? Which is happiness?

If one gets fame, money and good name and also has got people around him to realize it, then they feel that it is the biggest happiness. We human consider this as the greatest happiness and make our life move towards all these happiness. Some of them attain this state of happiness but for some people it remains as a far peak state which they could never attain. In this way only the people are leading their lives.

Paambaatti Siththar says that all these are not the state of happiness but realizing the supreme being is the most happiest thing and also he says the way of attaining it in the following song.

"பேசரிய நவவாயில் பீற்றல் துருத்தி
paesariya navavaayil peetral thuruththi
பெருங்காற்று உள்புகுந்ததால் பேச்சு உண்டாச்சே
perungaatru ulpugunhthathaal paechu undaachae
ஈசன்நிலை அறியாருக்கு இந்தத் துருத்தி
eesannilai ariyaarukku inhthath thuruththi
எரிமண்ணிற் இரையென்றே ஆடாய் பாம்பே!
erimannir iraiyenrae aadaai paambae!"

The goldsmith’s use an instrument named bellows which they use to blow air to the furnace. When it is operated, it takes the air from outside and blows the air through a hole to the furnace, so that the flame burns brightly. Paambaatti Siththar says that the human body is also similar to this.

There are nine holes in our body. Each one of them serves a purpose individually. Only if these function properly, the person remains alive. For all these, fundamentally we require oxygen. By handling the breath properly by doing the rechak, purak and kumbhak, we shall attain vaasi yoga. When the vaasi yoga is being done, the kundalini will also be attained and will result in realizing the Supreme Being.

But the human do not realizing this and go behind the unstable happiness and Paambaatti Siththar compares them to the dead body burning in the cemetery.

The way of attaining the birthless mukthi

Mukthi - salvation/final emancipation

The journey of human life which begins from the moment we take birth continues till our last breath. In this journey, the path that we choose decides our consequences and its effects. Paambaatti Siththar narrates how to choose that path in the following way. 

"தசநாடி தசவாயு சத்த தாது
thasanaadi thasavaayu saththa thaathu
சார்ந்த மரக்கப்பல் அதுதத்தி வீழுமே
saarntha marakkappal athuthaththi veezhumae
இசைவான கப்பலினை ஏக வெள்ளத்தில்
isaivaana kappalinai aega vellaththil
என்னாளும் ஓட்டத் துணிந்து ஆடாய் பாம்பே!
ennaalum oattath thuninthu aadaai paambae!"

If the waves increase, then the ship in the ocean loses its control and sinks into the ocean. But the ship which travels in an ocean without much of waves will reach to the destination safely.

Likewise if this body which is made out of ten tubular vessels (dasanaadi), ten vital airs (dasavaayu), seven types of constituent elements (saththa thaathu) are not placed towards the Supreme Being then it will fall on the ground like a ship drowned in the ocean.

Like the ship travelling in a waveless ocean, if the body and soul are placed towards the supreme being then the bitrthless beatification state can be attained says Paambaatti Siththar.

Ten tubular vessels (Dhasanaadi) -

Idakalai, Pingalai, Suzhimunai, Pooda, Gaandhaari, Aththisinguvai, Alampudai, Sangini, Guru, Kanni are ten tubular vessels.

Ten vital airs of the body (Dhasavaayu) -

Abaanan, Pranan, Samaanan, Udhaanan, Viyaanan, Naagan, Koorman, Giridharan, Devathaththan, Dhanunjayan are ten types of vital airs.

Seven constituent elements of the body (Saththa Thaathu) -

Rasam, blood, bone, skin, muscle, brain and sperm are seven constituent elements of the human body.

Guru is everything!

Our ancient moral book have positioned the guru after the mother and father. God also comes after them only. The vedas tell the same as “Guru saatchaath parabrahmam thasmai sree Guruvae namaha”.

In the siddhalogy, it is not necessary to describe about the greatness of the Siththars at all. Because they are the origin and end. The Siththars strongly believed that there is nothing superior to the guru. At this point we should recall the proverb, ‘any art without a guru is of waste’.

Paambaatti Siththar explains the greatness of the guru in the following way.

"சாற்றும் உடல்பொருள் ஆவி தத்தமாகவே
saatrum udalporul aavi thaththamaagavae
தானம் வாங்கிநின்ற எங்கள் சற்குருவினைப்
thaanam vaanginira engal sarguruvinaip
போற்றி மனம்வாக்கு காயம் மூன்றும்பொருந்தப்
poatri manamvaakku kaayam moonrumporunthap
புகழ்ந்து புகழ்ந்து நின்றாடாய் பாம்பே!
pugazhnthu pugazhnthu niraadaai paambae! "

Body, object and soul all these have come from the supreme being. The guru only is the form of that supreme being. We should praise and do honors to that guru. Paambaatti Siththar also says that we should realize whatever guru told and act accordingly.

As far as my knowledge, this type of celebration is rarely seen in the songs of the Siththars. I feel that as since it is about guru he brought such a celebrating state into this song.

Who is Siththar?

If a human who has been under the control of the five sense organs lose his life, then he cannot re enter into the same body once again. Once lost is lost. Though a person takes re-birth, he is dead only according to his friends and relatives.

But the one who realises them inspite of the attractive forces due to sense organs is known as the jeevan mukthar. They are beyond the birth and death. Realize that they are the stable people says Paambaatti Siththar.

These jeeva mukthars are only called as Siththars. They are beyond the death. They attain jeeva samadhi. Also they can attain jeeva samadhi* at various places simultaneously. Most of the Siththars call this as one of their theurgic play.

Homam – Finally some explanations

We have found the information related to so many homam told many Siththars like Agathiyar. I have also shared some of the rare homam told by Agathiyar. Taking the length of the series into the consideration, I wish to stop the posts of the homam with this.  So far till the past 13 posts, I have received so many queries through the comments and emails. I will give clarifications to those questions in this post.

As per our Hindu tradition it is believed that only the people of higher community should do these homams. They were only doing this homam on behalf of everyone. The Siththars broke this practice and Anybody with necessity and interest can do these homams. They believe that there should not be any brokers.

We should also get cleared about another opinion of the Siththars. The Siththars have written the songs with a reason that their disciples should get benefited out of it. But there is no information that these homam are to be done for the sake of the welfare of others. Hence if we do the homam by ourselves for our benefits it is very much preferable.

It is also told that the homa kundam are to be built on the land only. Even if we do it in home also we do it by spreading the mud on the land and then build the homa kundam on it and do the homam. Also the homa kundam has to be made out of clay only. The homa kundam has to be built in such a way that the exterior of it has five rows and the inner part is of round shape.

The person performing the homam has to sit facing the east direction. Also for writing on the homa kundam also we should the rice powder only. Both at the beginning and end of the homam, we should think about the guru. Only by doing this way the homam will attain completeness.

As per my view the homam is a scientific practice only. While searching the reason for it we may find many other interesting facts. In future if I am blessed with the grace of the guru I shall share those details also.

The homam that cure diseases

Agathiyar has told about a homam that helps to get cured from the diseases. But he has not mentioned about what sort of diseases get cured. So I think generally for any ill health we can attempt to do this homam. Agathiyar narrates the method of homam in the following way.

"பாரப்பா யின்னுமொரு சூட்சுமந்தான்
paarappaa yinnumoru sootchumanthaan
பத்தியுள்ள புலத்தியனே சொல்லக்கேளு
paththiyulla Pulaththiyanae sollakkaelu
பேணவே ஓமகுண்டம் சிறப்பாய்ச் செய்து
paenavae oamakundam sirappaaich seithu
நலமான அக்கினியை லரசால்செய்து
nalamaana akkiniyai larasaalseithu
பூணவே புவனையுட மந்திரந்தன்னால்
poonavae Puvanaiyuda manthiranthannaal
புத்தியுடன் பலாசுகொண் டோமாமம்பண்ணு
puththiyudan palaasukon doamaamampannu
வீரப்பாயு ன்னைபிடித்த நோய்களோடு
veerappaayu nnaipidiththa noaikaloadu
வெகுநூறு பிணிகளெல்லாம் விலகுந்தானே
vegunooru pinikalellaam vilakunthaanae"

For this homam, a hexagonal homa kundam has to be built. In the homa kundam, we should grow fire using the sticks of the pipal tree. While developing the fire we should chant the moola mantra of fire.

ஓம் அரிஓம் கோடிப்பிரகாசம் அக்கினியே அகோரா அங் உங் இங் வாவா லம் பட் சுவாகா
om ariom koadippirakaasam akkiniyae akoaraa an gung ing vaavaa lam pat suvaakaa”

After the fire grows fully, chant the Puvanai mantra.

ஓம் ஐயும் கிலியும் சவ்வும் சவ்வும் கிலியும் ஐயும் வாவா புவனை பரமேஸ்வரி பஞ்சாட்சரி ஆனந்தரூபி சுவாகா
om aiyum kiliyum savvum savvum aiyum vaavaa Puvanai Parameswari panchaatchari aanantharoopi suvaakaa”

Chant the Puvanai mantra for 1008 times and add the sticks of the portia tree in the homa kundam. By doing so, the person who was doing it will be cured from all the diseases. Also the person might not be affected by any disease in future also. Those who believe this can do this homam and attain benefits.

The homam that helps to live upto 300 years

As per the modern science it is impossible that an individual can stay alive up to 300 years. But still we have evidences that show that the Siththars lived for hundreds of years. In the Siththar songs, we see various methods followed by them to live for so many years.

Agathiyar says that one can live for 300 years by doing homam. The possibilities of this are subjected to researches. But still we can see this homam as it gives long life. Agathiyar narrates the method of homam in the following way

"அறிந்துகொண்டு புவனையுட மந்திரந்தன்னால்
arinthukondu puvanaiyuda manthiranthannil
அப்பனே நெய்தனிலே அருகுதோய்த்து
appanae neithanilae arukuthoaiththu
தெரிந்தந்த ஓமகுண்டந் தன்னில்மைந்தா
therinthantha oamakundan thannilmainthaa
சிறப்பான ஓமமது தீர்க்கமாக
sirappaana oamamathu theerkkamaaka
வருந்திநன்றாய் மண்டலமே செய்தாயாகில்
varunthinanraai mandalamae seithaayaakil
மகத்தான பிரமமய மாவாய்பாரு
makaththaana piramamaya maavaaipaaru
இருந்துரெண்டு மண்டலமே ஓமஞ்செய்தால்
irunthurendu mandalamae oamanjseithaal
என்னசொல்வேன் முன்னூறு வயதாம்பாரே
ennasolvaen munnooru vayathaampaarae”

For this homam, a hexagonal homa kundam pot has to be built. We should grow fire using the sticks of the Indian mesquit tree. While developing the fire we should chant the moola mantra of the fire.

ஓம் அரிஓம் கோடிப்பிரகாசம் அக்கினியே அகோரா அங் உங் இங் வாவா லம் பட் சுவாகா
om ariom koadippirakaasam akkiniyae akoaraa ang ung ing vaavaa lam pat suvaakaa”

After the fire grows fully, chant the following Puvanai mantra.

ஓம் ஐயும் கிலியும் சவ்வும் சவ்வும் கிலியும் ஐயும் வாவா புவனை பரமேஸ்வரி பஞ்சாட்சரி ஆனந்தரூபி சுவாகா
om aiyum kiliyum savvum savvum kiliyum aiyum vaavaa Puvanai parameswari panchaatchari aanantharoopi suvaakaa.”

Chant the Puvanai mantra for 1008 times and add hirathi grass in the homa kundam by dipping it in cow’s ghee. 

If this homam is done for 48 days then we can realize the Brahmam. And if we continue to do it for 96 days then we can live for 300 years.

Those who really believe in it can get the blessings of the guru and attempt to do it.

The homam that removes the sin and gives the wealth

Agathiyar narrates the types of sins that we may get by doing various activities in the following way.

"காணவே யின்னமொரு சூட்சங்கேளு
kaanavae yinnamoru sootchangaelu
கருணையுட னுலகத்தோ டிருக்கும்போது
karunaiyudanulakath thoadirukkum poathu
பூணவே கண்ணாரக்க ண்டபாவம்
poonavae kannaarakka ndapaavam
புத்தியுடன் மனதாரச் செய்தபாவம்
puththiyudan manathaarach seithapaavam
பேணவே காதாரக் கேட்டபாவம்
paenavae kaathaarak kaettapaavam
பெண்வகைகள் கோவதைகள் செய்தபாவம்
penvakaikal koavathaikal seithapaavam
ஊணவே பலவுயிரைக் கொன்ற பாவம்
oonavae palavuyiraik konra paavam
ஒருகோடி பாவமெல்லா மொழியக்கேளே
orukoadi paavamellaa mozhiyakkaelae"

He lists out them as the sin that is caused on seeing the sinful acts, sin that is caused by doing something wrong though we know it is wrong, sin that is caused by hearing bad, sin that is caused by making harassments to woman and cow, sin that is caused by killing of the other animals for food. If we start
listing out the sins, then the list prolongs says Agathiyar. He also says that the sins we did can be removed.

The Agathiyar narrates the way of getting relieved from the sin in the following way.

"ஒழியாத பாவமெல்லா மொழியமைந்தா
ozhiyaatha paavamellaa mozhiyamainthaa
உனக்குறுதி சொல்லுகிறே னுண்மையாக
unakkuruthi sollukirae nunmaiyaaka
வழியாக ஓமகுண்டம் நன்றாய்ச்செய்து
vazhiyaaga oamakundam nanraaichseithu
சுழிவாக ஆலரசு சமுத்துதன்னால்
suzhivaaga aalarasu samuththuthannaal
சுத்தமுட னக்கினியை வளர்த்துமைந்தா
suththamuda nakiniyai valarththumainthaa
தெளிவாகச் சொல்லுகிறேன் நன்றாயக்கேளு
thelivaagach sollukiraen nanraaikkaelu
மார்க்கமுடன் புவனையுட மந்திரந்தன்னால்
maarkkamudan Puvanaiyuda manthiranthannaal
சிவசிவா நவதானியங்கொண் டோமஞ்செய்யே
sivasivaa navathaaniyangon doamanjseyyae"

To get rid of all the above mentioned sins, a pentagonal homa kundam should be built and add banyan tree sticks and develop fire by chanting the mantra of fire. The following is the moola mantra of
fire:

ஓம் அரிஓம் கோடிப்பிரகாசம் அக்கினியே அகோரா அங் உங் இங்
வாவா லம் பட் சுவாகா
om ariom koadippirakaasam akkiniyae akoaraa an gung ing vaavaa lam pat suvaakaa.”

After the fire grows fully, chant the following Puvanai mantra. 

ஓம் ஐயும் கிலியும் சவ்வும் சவ்வும் கிலியும் ஐயும் வாவா புவனை பரமேஸ்வரி பஞ்சாட்சரி ஆனந்தரூபி சுவாகா
om aiyum kiliyum savvum savvum kiliyum aiyum vaavaa Puvanai Parameswari panchaatchri aanantharoopi suvaakaa”.

Chant the above mantra for 1008 times and add navadhaniyam* into the fire says Agathiyar.

"நீசெய்யடா சிறந்தஓமமது தீர்க்கமாக
neeseyyadaa siranthaoamamathu theerkkamaaga
தீராத பாவமெல்லாந் தீருந்தீரும்
theeraatha paavamellaan theeruntheerum
மெய்யடா பிரமையொடு சகலரோகம்
meyyadaa piramaiyodu sakalaroakam
விட்டுவிடும் யெக்கியஓ மங்கள்செய்தால்
vittuvidum yekkiyaoa mangalseithaal
மய்யமென்ற புருவநடு உச்சிமீதில்
mayyamenra puruvanadu uchimeethil
மகத்தான கற்பூர தீபந்தன்னால்
makaththaana karpoora theepanthannil
அய்யனே உனதுடைய சமூகங்கண்டால்
ayyanae unathudaiya samookangandaal
அனுதினமுஞ் செல்வபதி யாவான்பாரே
anuthinamunj selvapathi yaavaanpaarae"

By doing this homam for three days, we can get rid of all the sins that we have committed and all the disturbances in the mind will also get cleared. By doing this homam for three, days the person who was doing this would find a light in between the eyebrows. If the person sees the light he will be the wealthy person forever.

* Navadhaniyam – the nine kinds of grain namely wheat, paddy, redgram, greengram, bengalgram, beans, sesame, blackgram and horsegram

There were so many issues in writing the same topic as a sequence of posts. Without affecting the academics, I used to write the posts in the weekend that has to be posted in the week time. Also I feel that I have been blessed by guru. This is 400th post of our site.

At the beginning I had an idea of sharing out all the ideas that I have within me. As a result of that only I used to write two, three posts per day. At that point of time I did not know about all these tactics of the website handling. The Tamil magazine “Ananda Vikatan” has showed me a new level of exposure. I would like to share my thanks to them at this point. Only after that most of them started reading the website and posting comments.

At a point of time, having more interest to attain more hits I used to share all the information that I have at a time. Hence rarely my posts were introduced to new readers. At a point of time I felt that I should leave all these websites and the politics involved. But I continued to write because I wanted to share the information of the Siththars to the present generation.

We do not know about those who wrote all the information from the manuscript on palm leaf to the books. But the great work that they have did have its importance and value even today. As a next stage I am making attempts to convert them into electronic media. In the last year I have made 9 e-books. In future I shall make further attempts to write some more e-books.

I am a person who does not know anything beyond the Sri Lanka border. But now I proudly say that I have friends all around the World. Their support and encouragement has made me to move forward. I wish to thank all of them.

The homam to attain the blessings of the Puvanai

In the past three posts I have mentioned that during the homam, we should chant the Puvanai mantra.   The ingredients used in the homam varies but the mantras are same. We shall first see about the goddess Puvanai and then see the way of attaining her blessings.

We have seen about the Vaalai, the goddess worshipped by the Siththars in a previus post. The goddess is in the form of a child and to read more information about the goddess, supreme god to the Siththars!!

The Puvanai goddess is present everywhere in the universe in an inseparable form.  The Siththars say that the Puvanai goddess is in the form of the mother of the Vaalai goddess, who is in the form of a child. This goddess has got a form which does not have a form. The Siththars say that without the blessings of this goddess nothing is possible. 

Agathiyar narrates the method of homam in the following way.

"பாரப்பா யின்னமொரு பாகங்கேளு
paarappaa yinnamoru paakangaelu
பத்தியுடன் கோதுமைகொண் டோமம்பண்ண
paththiyudan koathumaikon doamampanna
வீரப்பா கொண்டதொரு அபமிருத்து
veerappaa kondathoru apamiruththu
மெஞ்ஞான பூரணத்தால் விலகும்பாரே
menjaana pooranaththaal vilakumpaarae
நேரப்பா அபமிருத்து விலகித்தானால்
naerappaa apamiruththu vilakiththaanaal
நினைத்தபடி முடிக்கவண்ணம் நிசந்தான்பாரு
ninaiththapadi mudikkavannam nisanthaanpaaru
காரப்பா கருணைவளறர் புவனைதன்னால்
karappaa karunaivalarar puvanaithannaal
கண்காண இன்னம்வெகு கடாட்சமே
kankaana innamvegu kadaatchamae"

For this homam, a round shaped homa kundam has to be used. The person performing the homam should sit facing the east direction. In the homa kundam we should grow fire using the sticks of the banyan tree. While developing the fire we should chant the moola mantra of fire.

ஓம் அரிஓம் கோடிப்பிரகாசம் அக்கினியே அகோரா அங் உங் இங் வாவா லம் பட் சுவாகா
om ariom koadippirakaasam akkiniyae akoaraa an gung ing vaavaa lam pat suvaakaa”

After the fire grows fully, add wheat into it and chant the Puvanai mantra for 1008 times. On doing this we will get the blessings of the Puvanai goddess.

The following is the Puvanai mantra:

ஓம் ஐயும் கிலியும் சவ்வும் சவ்வும் கிலியும் ஐயும் வாவா புவனை பரமேஸ்வரி பஞ்சாட்சரி ஆனந்தரூபி சுவாகா
om aiyum kiliyum savvum savvum kiliyum aiyum vaavaa Puvaanai Parameswari panchaatchari aanantharoopi suvaakaa.”

Like this if we chant mantra for 1008 times by adding wheat into the homa kundam, we can attain the blessings of Puvanai. Along with that we shall get many other benefits also. Those who believe this can do this homam in home itself.

Those who really believe in it can get the blessings of the guru and attempt to do it.

The homam that gives a long life

All the human beings wish to lead a long life with a good health. The good health is the main sign for leading a long life. For this only we spend a major portion of our life. To protect the body there are so many ways. Agathiyar says that by doing the homam also one can lead a long life. That too we can live for 300 years he says.

Isn’t it surprising? Rather than passing comments that all these are fake, we can try to research the reasons behind them. Agathiyar narrates the method of doing this homam in the following way

"ஆமப்பா நெற்பொரியுந் தேனுங்கூட்டி
aamappaa nerporiyun thaenungkootti
தானென்ற டோமமது அன்பாய்ச்செய்தால்
thaanenra doamamathu anbaaichseithaal
நாமப்பா சொல்லுகிறோ முன்னூருண்டு
naamappaa sollukiroa munnoorundu
நன்மையுடன் தானிருப்பாய் நயனம்பாரு
nanmaiyudan thaaniruppaai nayanampaaru
தாமப்பா நயனமென்ற தீபந்தன்னை
thaamappaa nayanamenra theepanthannai
சதாகாலம் பூரணமாய்த் தானேகண்டால்
sadhaakaalam pooranamaaith thaanaekandaal
வாமப்பால் மந்திரகலை வாமபோதம்
vaamappaal manthirakalai vaamapoatham
வாமம்வளர் புவனையைநீ மகிழ்ந்துகாணே
vaamamvalar Puvanaiyainee magiznthukaanae”

For this homam, a triangular homa kundam has to be made. The person performing the homam should sit facing the east direction. In the homa kundam, we should grow fire using the sticks of the banyan tree. While developing the fire we should chant the moola mantra of fire.

After the fire grows fully, add puffed paddy and honey into it and chant the Puvanai mantra for 1008 times. The following is the Puvanai mantra.

ஓம் ஐயும் கிலியும் சவ்வும் சவ்வும் கிலியும் ஐயும் வாவா புவனை பரமேஸ்வரி பஞ்சாட்சரி ஆனந்தரூபி சுவாகா
om aiyum kiliyum savvum savvum kiliyum aiyum vaavaa Puvanai Parameswari panchaatchari aanantharoopi suvaakaa”

This homam has to be done for hundred times within 48 days. Those who does this will attain a long life and will have a chance of seeing the most powerful goddess Puvanai says Agathiyar. Also those who have believe this can do this homam in home itself.

The homam for “Puthra Bhagya” told by Agathiyar

Puthra – child; Bhagya - blessing

We have seen most of the married couples being bothered about not having a kid. Today’s modern allopathy has found so many ways to resolve it.

But in the olden days to resolve this problem, Agathiyar has told a homam to be blessed with a kid. The possibility of this should be subjected to research and argument.

For this homam, a square homa kundam has to be used. The person performing the homam should sit facing the east direction. It should be even more effective if both husband and wife sit together and do. Agathiyar narrates the way of doing it in the following way

சித்ததான சித்துகளுக் குறுதியான
siththathaana siththukaluk kuruthiyaana
சிவசிவா புவனைதிரு மந்திரந்தன்னை
sivasivaa puvanaithiru manthiranthannai
பத்தாசை வைத்து மன துறுதிகொண்டு
paththaasai vaiththu mana thuruthikondu
பாலுடன் சந்தனமொடு தேனுங்கூட்டி
paaludan santhanamodu thaenunkootti
சுத்தான மனம்நிறுத்தி யேகமாகி
suththaana manamniruththi yaekamaaki
கருத்தாய்நீயும் சிறப்புட னோமம்பண்ண
karuththaaineeyum sirappuda noamampanna
வத்தாத பாக்கியசந் தான பாக்கியம்
vaththaatha paakkiyasan thaana paakkiyam
வளருமடா ஒன்றுபத்தாய் மனங்கண்டாயே
vlarumadaa onrupaththaai manangkandaayae.”

Light fire in the homa kundam with the sticks of the ebony and the fig tree. While developing the fire we should chant the moola mantra of agni (fire).

The moola mantra of fire..

"ஓம் அரிஓம் கோடிப்பிரகாசம் அக்கினியே அகோரா அங் உங் இங் வாவா லம் பட் சுவாகா
om ariom koadippirakaasam akkiniyae akoaraa ang ung ing vaavaa lam pat suvaakaa"

When the fire is burning out vigorously, add the mixture of cow’s milk, sandal and honey into the fire and chant the Puvanai mantra 1008 times. The following is the puvanai mantra.

"ஓம் ஐயும் கிலியும் சவ்வும் சவ்வும் கிலியும் ஐயும் வாவா புவனை பரமேஸ்வரி பஞ்சாட்சரி ஆனந்தரூபி சுவாகா
om aiyum kiliyum savvum kiliyum aiyum vaavaa puvanai parameswari panjaatchari aanantharoopi suvaakaa”

If we do like this, those who do not have kids will be blessed with a kid says Agathiyar. He says that its effect would be seen in a month itself and can have baby in tenth month. This homam can be done at home says Agathiyar. Isn’t it interesting?

The homam that relieves from the “Graha Dosha” told by Agathiyar

I will share some of the homams in the upcoming posts. In the previous posts we have seen about the things used in the homams. Anybody can attempt to do these homams. The Siththars completely disagree with the idea that people of certain community only should perform homam.

Anybody can do these homams for attaining the blessings of the gurus. There are no unnecessary expenses in this. Now let us see the homam that relieves from the navagraha’s (nine planets) effect told by Agathiyar.

In astrology there would be nobody who can escape from the effects of the navagrahas. There are so many ways said to get relieved and reduce the effects of the navagrahas. We believe that the methods which are done by spending lots of money could give the right results. Agathiyar says about a less expensive homam in the following way.

"காணவே இன்னமொரு கருமானங்கேள்
kaanavae innamoru karumaanangael
கருணைவளர் புலத்தியனே கருணை கூர்ந்து
karunaivalar Pulaththiyanae karunai koornthu
பேணவே ஓமகுண்டம் நன்றாய்ச் செய்து
paenavae oamakundam nanraaich seithu
பிலமான அக்கினியை லரசால்செய்து
pilamaana akkiniyai larasaalseithu
பூணவே புவனையுட மந்திரந்தன்னால்
poonavae puvanaiyuda manhthiranthannil
புத்தியுடன் எள்ப்பொரிகொண் டோமாமம்பண்ணு
puththiyudan elpporikon doamaampannu
தோணவே கிரகமதில் நின்றதோஷந்
thoanavae kirakamathil ninrathoshan
சுத்தமுட நீக்குமடா நித்தம்பாரே
suththamuda neekkumadaa niththampaarae"

Make a hexagonal homa kundam and the person who is performing the homam has to be seated facing the east direction. Start the homam by praying to the guru and the traditional family deity. Light the fire in the homa kundam using the sticks of the banyan tree. While lighting the fire we should chant the moola mantra of fire. The following is the mantra.

"ஓம் அரிஓம் கோடிப்பிரகாசம் அக்கினியே அகோரா அங் உங் இங் வாவா லம் பட் சுவாகா
om ariom koadippirakaasam akkiniyae akoara ang ung ing vaavaa lam pat suvaakaa"

After developing the fire chant the following mantra of Puvanai.

"ஓம் ஐயும் கிலியும் சவ்வும் சவ்வும் கிலியும் ஐயும் வாவா புவனை பரமேஸ்வரி பஞ்சாட்சரி ஆனந்தரூபி சுவாகா
om aiyum kiliyum savvum savvum kiliyum aiyum vaavaa puvanai paramaesvari panjaatchari aananhtharoopi suvaakaa"

While chanting this mantra drop puffed sesame into the fire. Chanting this mantra 1008 times will reveal you from the dosha (defects) says Agathiyar.

Isn’t it simple? Those who are interested can attempt to do it.

Shapes and types of Homa Kundam

I shared  about homam in the previous posts.  In the last post, we have seen about the things used in the homam. In this post we shall see about these homa kundam*. The Siththars have told about them as they are available in six types. The shapes of these homa kundams vary based on the usage.

It is believed that the homams are to be done on the ground only. Those who do this homam should be seated facing east direction. Anybody can attempt to do these homams. The Siththars completely disagree with the idea of Hindu tradition that people of certain community only should perform homam.

The homa kundam should be formed in such a way that they have to gone through five steps. We should ensure that there is a square shaped hole at the centre. Agathiyar says about the greatness of the Homa kundam in the following way.

"தானான தீபமடா மந்திரபீடம்
thaanaana theepamadaa manthirapeedam
சராசரத்துக் குயிரான மந்திரபீடம்
saraasaraththuk kuyiraana manthirapeedam
வானான அண்டமடா மந்திரபீடம்
vaanaana andamadaa manthirapeedam
மகத்தான ரவிமதியு மந்திரபீடம்
magaththaana ravimathiyu manthirapeedam
சிவாயகுரு பீடமென்ற பீடங்கள்போடே
sivaayakuru peedamenra peedangalpoadae"

What do we need to perform Homam?

We have seen that in the Yajur veda thirty types of homam are being told. Each one of them has got a particular reason to do them. Hence the things used in the homam also vary. Generally the things used in the homam are told in the Yajur veda in the following way.

Various kinds of herbs or stems of trees, kinds of grains, fruits, dry fruits, liquid things like ghee, milk, food items,  fragrant products, clothes, metals, ornaments and farm animals,  all comes under the list.  Today we shall see about the details shared by the Siththars regarding the things to be used in the homa kundam*.

Agathiyar and Pulipaani has listed out in the following way.

"நாளப்பா சமுத்துவகை சொல்லக் கேளு
naalappaa samuththuvagai sollak kaelu
நலமான அரசினொடு மாவின் சுப்பி
nalamaana arasinodu maavin suppi
சுப்பென்ற மாவினோடு அத்திக் கொம்பு
suppenra maavinodu aththik kombu
சொல்வெட்டி வேர் விளாமிச்சியோடு
solvetti vaer vilaamichiyoadu
ஆப்பென்ற ஆலுடன்மல்லிகையின் சுப்பி

அப்பனே நெல்லிசுப்பி நாவல் சுப்பி

சுப்பென்ர அத்தி சுப்பி யிலுப்பை சுப்பி

மூளப்பா செபஞ்செய்து ஓம்சாந்தியென்றே
moolappaa sepanjseythu omsaanthiyenrae
தீர்க்கமாம் ஓமத்தில் போடு போடே
theerkkamaam oamaththil poadu poadae”

They named the herbs used in the homam as samiththu. The details of the samiththus are as follows.

Banyan, fig, algum, date plum, pipal, eagle-wood, ebony tree, portia tree, amla, jaumoon - plum, yarcum, kaduku roakini, Indian mesquit,  cuscus root, moonjuppul, kaus, naayuruvi*, vilaamichi root, sandal, multi-leaved chaste tree, red cedar, mango and many other kinds of medicinal plants and the fragrants got from excretory of animals. Along with this cow’s milk, cow’s curd, cow’s ghee, cow’s urine and cow’s dung will be used. Also many kinds of medicinal herbs will also be used. Also various grains, rice, lemon, cotton clothes and threads and many other things are used depending on the kind of homam.
