What is the religion of Siththars?

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

We people used to have a thought of that, sithars were all Tamils and belong to Hindu religion that too precisely we can say as Saivites. Might it be be true? Can we conceal them within these small credentials?

This post is just the curiousitical outcome of my thinking concerning, what will be the possible outcome when we approached in this path? That’s it.  However, I will not say it as an accurate answer for the above question. But, we may take it as the starting point of the search. I would be grateful to readers to notify me if there is anything wrong about my opinion in this regard.

Most of us believed Siththars are one who has gained wisdom clearing their mind and has realized their oneself. But, actually, this may be the outline explanation for defining Siththars. According to my knowledge, each and every Siththars are unique and are highly well beyond these types of boundarial restrictions.

The only thing which is common among them is the balanced vision on material world and they are apart from the common beliefs like, caste, tribe, religion, language, rituals. Hence, how can we restrict them to a single language, religion or community?

Sithalogy is one of the highly developed independent culture which has no bounds. Siththars are not only from the background of Hindu religion, there are lots of those highly cultured Siththars identified in various religions too and still believed to be living in this world. Definitely, they are not paranormal persons. However, they are people leading a very simple life. We will come to know them, only when we approach them through open mind without any preoccupancy.

The simple and common mistakes in this path may lead to the identifications like a person against religion and god and get into the just opposite path of atheism. It is to be clarified that, neither Siththars nor similar people from other religion distrusted or rebuffed the belief in god. However, we can say searching the true supremacy in their path might be correct phrase.

The path of searching usually includes understanding of self and surroundings along with realization of their natural existence through which the one can attain the stabilized higher knowledge. This path is structured with the guidance of guru. With the attainment of that higher level, Siththars were representatives of none and they never wanted to prioritize themselves primarily. This state is termed as the divinity.

Siththars used to ignore the religious organization but  will not deny the existence or nature of god. According to Siththar Pattinathaar, those who were not aware of the supremity hidden in oneself are poor.

onrenriru theivam undenriru
onraai uyiraai udalthoarum neeirunthum
enrum ariyaarkal aezhaikalthaam pooranamae.

Similarly, Siththar Thirumoolar says as below:

அகம் புகுந்தான் அடியேற்கு அருளாலே
akam pukunthaan adiyaerkku arulaalae
akam pukunthum theriyaan arul illoarkku.

However, Siththar Sivavaakkiyar further noted his intense thought as follows:

கோயில் பள்ளி ஏதடா குறித்துநின்று தேதடா
koayil palli aethadaa kuriththuninru thaethadaa
vaayinaal thozhuthuninra manthiranga laethadaa
jnanamaana palliyil nanmaiyaai vananginaal
kaayamaana palliyil kaanalaa miraiyaiyae.

The following poem of Siththar Thirumoolar also abides the same:

உடம்பினை முன்னம் இழுக்கென் றிருந்தேன்
udampinai munnam izukken rirunthaen
udampinuk kullae yuruporul kandaen
udampullae uththaman koayilkon daanenru
udampinai yaanirun thoampukinranae.

All the searches, clarification are the real treasures that we got in the search of survival of man in all part. Saving and eulogize those treasures is the perfect way of honoring them. Accepting love as their prime god and divinity, it will be perfect to call Siththars as people’s representatives rather than religion’s representative who devoted their life to welfare of the people.

Be proud in follow their path of humanitarian and love rather than in path of religion.

Stay tuned!!!

State of No-Reincarnation

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

In today’s life where the money is given more prominence, the human values are least bothered. The wants pertaining to our external sources are given more importance compared to the wants that our heart desires.  There is no use of worrying about it after the days pass.

The thought that money could by everything is prevailing among most of us. Hence all of them are rushing to fill the money in the temple hundis as a pay to the sin they committed.

It is considered by the Siththars that the start and end goal for the “true realization” and “true wisdom” is attaining the state of no-reincarnation only. The reason for all those karmas are the interest that human show for all his external sources than for himself. The Siththars believed that as a result of all these only the birth of human takes place.

Also they say that it is the reason for all the good and bad deeds that we face in our life time. He compares it to the following saying: having him as son is your fate and having you as his father is the fate of your son.

Pattinaththar has wrote so many songs about this state of no-reincarnation.  Most of his songs are based on the mind’s feelings. His songs say that leaving all the pleasure from external and by thinking about the supreme being in mind makes our life better.

"ஊட்டுவிப்பானும் உறங்குவிப்பானும் இங்கு ஒன்றோடொன்றை
oottuvippaanum uranguvippaanum ingu onroadonrai
moottuvip paanum muyanguvip paanum muyanravinai
kaattuvip paanum iruvinaip paasak kayitrin vazi
aattuvippaanum oruvan undaethillai ambalaththae!"

(Pattinaththar)

To face all the consequences that we have did in our previous birth only, we take this re-birth. It is the reason for all the good and bad deeds that we face in our life time. Being born as a Human is a rare thing and we have to utilize this by concentrating on good thoughts and actions. So that we can get rid of the karmas.

Thiruvalluvar has also told a kural that speaks about this.

"வேண்டுங்கால் வேண்டும் பிறவாமை மற்றது
vaendungaal vaendum piravaamai matrathu
vaendaamai vaenda varum."

(Thiruvalluvar)

We may get this state of no re-incarnation only when we desire for it. And we get that sate only when we lose the desire for all our wants.

(Pattinaththar)

The above told songs are in a scenario as Pattinaththar has told to his own mind.

'Trust the advices of the genuine guru who realised the truth. Pray to his feet. Do not trust that the relationships and the wealth are permanent. If you believe it then you will live only to grow your body. Think that this body appears and disappears as an illusion. Like a water running out from a pot when it is tumbled, consider the wealth is also a temporary asset. If you trust all these beliefs then you can lead a good life without doing any sin. Oh my mind! this is the advice that I give you' says Pattinathaar.

He also adds that whoever it is they must keep themselves in a disciplined way. You have to follow a honest path. The advice of the one who follws a wrong path is not wothy of being valued. Let off the feeling of prideness. Do not have the company of bad people. Do not find fault with the good ones, rather try to make friendship with them. Those who are following a common life, for them following the right path is most important. Thought, word, action all these three has to be same and good.

All these truth is explained in the songs of Pattinaththar. This is the way followed by the ancient Tamilians.

Wake up as a new man and see.

The supreme being is empowered by light

Author: தோழி / Labels:

The Siththars as well as the elders of the saivites has told about the supreme being that it is the form of the light. Ramalinga Adigal has also described the god as the graceful great light. Hence the followers of saivite has finalised that the supreme being is a form of light.

Pattinaththar has also described the god as light only. God is a form of light present at every corner of the world. The one who cannot understand about this god is stupid only says Pattinaththar.

"எட்டுத் திசையும் பதினாறு கோணமும் எங்கும் ஒன்றாய்
ettuth thisaiyum pathinaaru koanamum engum onraai
muttiththuthathumbi mulaiththoangum soathiyai

Truths of life said by Pattinaththar

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Either wife or childrens they show love only till they need our help. If they do not need our help they will also show hatred towards us. Has any lovable wife or children sacrificed their life after the husband has died? How many childrens have sacrificed their lives after their father has died? Pattinaththar has told this fact clearly in a song.

katti anaiththidum pendirum, makkalum,
....kaalan thachchan
vetti murikkum marampoal sareeraththai
....veezhthi vittaal
kotti muzhangi azhuvaar; mayaanam
....kuruki, appaal
etti adivaip paroa? irai vaa!kachchi
....aegambanae!

The truth that has been told in this song cannot be refused by anyone. The real fact that happens really in our daily life. If someone dies he is taken to the cemetery and either burnt or buried, but neither his wife nor his children go along with him. On sharing this truth with us Pattinaththar has also told us an information.

"Live with fame, do good for everyone, make everyone as your relation and help them, do not slip from the good ethical codes of conduct. The fame and goodness comes because of this is the only thing that comes along with you even after the death" is emphasized in the song.

Who is a noble man?

Author: தோழி / Labels:

In the songs of Pattinaththar, there are so many songs that exactly picturize the worldly nature, the liveliness of the people and their hearts.

"அறந்தான் இயற்றும் அவனிலுங்
aranthaan iyatrum avanilung
..koadi athigam illam
thuranthaan; avanin sathakoadi
. . உள்ளத் துறவுடையோன்;
..ullath thuravudaiyoan;
maram thaan arakkatru arivoadu
. . இருந்துஇரு வாதனையற்று;
..irunthuiru vaathanaiyatru
irunthaan perumaiyai ensollu
..vaen? kachchi yegambanae!"

The person who lives a family life by following so many ethical codes of conduct is the best one. But than him the person who has left the family life is even more noble. He is great than the person who is a family man.

Than the one who has left the family, the person who has got the left the ideas and thoughts of the family life from his mind is even more noble. Person without any thoughts in his minds and living without selfishness is even more noble.

Pattinaththar says, "I will say who is the person with most greatness. Listen to it. Person who have  learnt the education that has no crime, being honest and following ethical codes of conduct and doing duties without thinking of good and bad outcomes from it,  is the most great and noble person."

People who ought to be hated

Author: தோழி / Labels:

There are some people, who ought to be hated, there are some more people who gets fear on seeing others, we need to identify such people. We must always stay a bit careful with people of such kind. Pattinaththar says in a very simple way about the people of that kind.

They indulge themselves into irrelevant conflicts and irrelevant arguments. Even though you do not show interest towards such conflicts and arguments they will always try to pull you into it.

They do not help the good cause, they always step forward to help the bad causes, everyday they earn money by making wrong things, and they spend that money to a girl and they live under her control only. They spend their entire lifetime in this way only. Oh god, why did people of this kind take birth, he sings.

“வாதுக்குச் சண்டைக்குப் போவார்;
vaathukku sandaikku poavaar;
..வருவார் வழக்குரைப்பார்;
..varuvaar vazhakkuraippaar;
theethuk kuthaviyunj seythiduvaar,
..thinan thaedi onrum
maadhu kaliththu mayangiduvaar
..vithi maalumattum
yaethukkivar piranthaar? iraivaa!
..kachchi Egambanae!”

Some people never learn to speak truth, they never wish to praise the good people. They always aim to find faults with the good persons. They do not mind to scold even their own parents also. The one who speak bad about their mother rather than worshiping her are very dangerous. They will always think about how to indulge others into troubles. They may cause harm even to the people who helped them, it is a mere waste of these people living on this earth. Even if their death also does not cause any harm or loss says Pattinaththar.

“ஓயாமல் பொய் சொல்வர், நல்லோரை
oayaamal poi solvar, nalloarai
..ninthippar; utruppetra
thaayaarai vaivar; sathi aayiram
..seyvar; saaththirangal
ஆயார்; பிறர்க்கு உபகாரம் செய்யார்;
aayaar; pirarkku ubakaaram seyyaar;
..thamaian dinaarkku onru
eeyaar, irunthenna? poay enna?
..kaan! kachchi egambanae!”

Hence, stay away from people of this kind, stay as the one who helps out the human, be like a disciplined person says Pattinaththar.

Forgive our mistakes

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Those who born as Human generally commit many mistakes. We should pray God to forgive our mistakes. We should not be in deceptive state considering astatic things as important and real. Pattinaththar explained it beautifully in one of his songs.

“கல்லாப் பிழையும் கருதாப் பிழையும் கசிந்துருகி
kallaa pizhaiyum karuthaa pizhaiyum kasinthuruki
nillaa pizhaiyum nhinaiyaa pizhaiyumnin ainthezhuththai
sollaa pizhaiyum thuthiyaapizhaiyum thozha oizhaiyum
ellaa pizhaiyum poruththarul vaai kachiyegambanae.”

Pattinaththar had described about the relationship that Human has to have with God. Pattinaththar was a renowned devotee of Lord Shiva. In the above script, he said that if we keep chanting “Om Namasivaya” then we can feel the divine experience and also God will grace us by forgiving our mistakes.

Pattinaththar had said about the ways to attain eternal bliss. Pattinaththars’ script were always special since it consists of beautiful and rhyming words with deep meanings.

If someone read Pattinaththar’s ideologies deeply, then there is no doubt that it will act as a genuine spiritual guide.

Ones’s deed will burn thyself

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Pattinaththar, after his renunciation, lived by begging for alms. The relatives of Pattinaththar were worried about their caste pride. One day, in anger, relatives of Pattinaththar poisoned the appam* and offered him to eat.

Pattinaththar, with his mystical wisdom, realised the truth and didn’t eat that appam. While Pattinaththar was saying the following verse, he just thrown the Appam into the rooftop of the relative’s house who poisoned him.

“தன்வினை தன்னைச்சுடும்,
thanvinai thannaisudum,
ottappam veettai sudum”

One’s deed will burn thyself,
Appam in the rooftop will burn the house

As he said the verse, his relative's house started to burn..

This was the first miracle which made the World to know about Pattinathar’s conceit.

*Appam - a flat round cake of rice flour and jaggery fried in oil

Men can live forever

Author: தோழி / Labels:

If all the Worldly desires are referred as the carnal pleasures, then what is the real bliss?

Siththars have answer for this too. When one can fuse his soul with God, he can attain an endless bliss. To achieve this endless bliss, Pattinaththar says, one has to become immortal.

"பிறவாதிருக்க வரம் தரவேண்டும்; பிறந்துவிட்டால்
piravaathirukka varam tharavendum; piranthuvittal
iravaa thirukka marunthundu kaan ithu eppadiyo
aramaar pugazhthillai amabalavaanar adikkamalam
maravaa thirumaname! athukaan nal marunthunakke..!”

Pattinaththar, in the above song, highlights an important point. One who is born could live forever without mortality by using a special medicine. From this we can clearly understand how Siththars live with their subtle body.

What have you got in renunciation?

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Pattinaththar, a rich man, had renounced his wealth and became Thuravi (recluse).

Knowing that King, with all his men, came to see Pattinaththar. Pattinaththar was alone and he was sitting there in a corner as a sage just only wearing his loin-cloth.

King bowing to Pattinaththar, asked him sarcastically, “Your wealth is almost equal to mine.  Why have you left all those? What have you got in this renunciation?”

Pattinaththar replied softly, “If I had all those wealth, I will be standing before you. Since I renounced everything, you are standing before me. Isn’t it  enough?”
