Sacrificial offering condemned by Siththars

Author: தோழி / Labels:

When the people have any diseases or distress, they would sacrifice animals in the Pidari* temple in the name of naerthi kadan*.  Sivavaakkiyar, who had seen this, condemnly said, “The God, to which you sacrifice the animals for receiving the grace, will Herself let your life emaciate and decay. You will be made as shrew-mouse.”

“தங்கள் தேகம் நோய்பெறின் தனைப்பி டாரி கோவிலில்
thangal thaegam noayperin thanaippi daari koavilil
pongal vaiththu aadukoazhi poosai paliyai ittida
naanga sollum nalimigunthu naalum thaeynthu moonjoorai
ungal kulatheivam ungal urukku laippa thunmaiyae!”

In the above script, Sivavaakkiyar had condemned the sacrificial offering of animals to God.

*Naerthi kadan - offering in fulfilment of a vow made to a deity

*Pidari - a female deity who protects the village. She appears with the protruding tongue and the trident in hand.

Why herbs has to be get rid of curse?

Author: தோழி / Labels:

As every living beings plants too have life or soul. Generally when we pull out the plants, the plants will lose its soul. Can we do anything with the soulless things? Only if there is soul we can make use of it.

So for the better usage of the herbs, it is important to pluck out the plant without loosing its soul. If we pluck out the herbs after getting rid of the curses, then the soul will continue to stay with the herbs. It’s necessary to get rid of the curse from the herb to make the herb function properly. If not, the herb is useless.

The herbs, which are free of curse, are used for medicine. But in the medicinal herbs, different way is used to get rid of the curse.

Types of Vasiyam

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

For the better living of the World people, all the eminent Siththars has written about the five topics: spiritual knowledge, medicine, alchemy, astrology and maanthreegam*.

In maanthreegam, at the part of Ashtama Siddhi, the mystical powers were categorized into eight divisions.

1.Vasiyam:
The power of hypnotizing others.

2. Mohanam:
The power of making others sexually desire on thyself.

3. Sthambam:
The power of stopping any actions to idleness.

4. Uchadanam:
The power of driving away the evil forces from its place.

5. Aakrushnam:
The power of making evil celestials bowing before us.

6. Paethanam:
The power of making other’s mind to confound.

7. Vithveshanam:
The power of creating enemity between one another.

8. Maaranam:
The power of causing damage to all beings.

In the above eight, we are going to see just about Vasiyam. We will see the remaining at some other time. Again this vasiyam is categorized into eight parts. They are,

        1. Jana vasiyam
        2. Raja vasiyam
        3. Purusha vasiyam
        4. Sthiri vasiyam
        5. Miruga vasiyam
        6. Deva vasiyam
        7. Sathru vasiyam
        8. Loaga vasiyam

Using this art of vasiyam, we can get many benefits from fellow Humans and other living beings. The art of vasiyam which was attained from hard practice should not be used for any bad purpose or for hurting others. If one use it for bad purpose, then it will turn against thyself and cause damage immediately or within their life time.

So, the art of vasiyam should be used for good purposes. It can be used to avoid any obstacle we encounter in our righteous path. By using this art, we should live and let others live too.

In the next post we will see about the herbs used for vasiyam and we will also see how to pluck and use those herbs.

*Manthreegam – the art of changing static to kinetic energy by means of incantation

*Vasiyam – the magical art of bringing people, animals, devils etc under one’s control

Forgive our mistakes

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Those who born as Human generally commit many mistakes. We should pray God to forgive our mistakes. We should not be in deceptive state considering astatic things as important and real. Pattinaththar explained it beautifully in one of his songs.

“கல்லாப் பிழையும் கருதாப் பிழையும் கசிந்துருகி
kallaa pizhaiyum karuthaa pizhaiyum kasinthuruki
nillaa pizhaiyum nhinaiyaa pizhaiyumnin ainthezhuththai
sollaa pizhaiyum thuthiyaapizhaiyum thozha oizhaiyum
ellaa pizhaiyum poruththarul vaai kachiyegambanae.”

Pattinaththar had described about the relationship that Human has to have with God. Pattinaththar was a renowned devotee of Lord Shiva. In the above script, he said that if we keep chanting “Om Namasivaya” then we can feel the divine experience and also God will grace us by forgiving our mistakes.

Pattinaththar had said about the ways to attain eternal bliss. Pattinaththars’ script were always special since it consists of beautiful and rhyming words with deep meanings.

If someone read Pattinaththar’s ideologies deeply, then there is no doubt that it will act as a genuine spiritual guide.

Purity of the mind

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

To get rid of the sacks of sins we carry, we would go to the sacred temples and bathe in sacred rivers. Even if we clean the bitter-gourd in any river, the bitter taste of it won’t change. Like that, without purifying our mind, there’s no use of visiting sacred places.

God will occupy one’s heart whose mind is pure. Siththars too strongly insisted about the importance of being pure in mind.

“வெள்ளத் தனைய மலர்நீட்டம் மாந்தர்தம்
vellath thanaiya malarneettam maanthartham
ullath thanaiya thuyarvu.”

 said by Valluvar,

 “மனமது செம்மையானால்
manamathu semmaiyaanaal
manthiram sebikka vaendaa”

said by Agathiyar,

 “சித்தத் தலம் போல தெய்வம் இருக்கின்ற
siththa thalam poala theivam irukkinra
suththa thalangalundoa? kuthambaai
suththa thalangalundoa?”

said by Kuthambai Siththar. It was all about being pure in mind. As Siththars had insisted, let us free our mind from impurities and let God reside in our heart.

Benefits of Neem

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

Mostly many of us don’t know about the great qualities of neem. Even if it is known, that may be the general characteristics of the neem tree. In his book 'Thathuvam Munnooru', Agathiyar had explained about the benefits of neem in detail in third gnana kaandam.

“பாரப்பா வேம்பினூட பிறப்பைக் கேளு
paarappaa vaembinooda pirappai kaelu
paniyanaiyan paalaazhi yamurtham thanai

saerappaa Devarudan kalanthiruntha thaalae
Thirumaalu moonragappai padaiththaan kaelu.”

The above script says, “Listen. I will say about the birth of Neem. When Thirumal appeared as girl and shared the elixir to celestials using wooden ladle, demons fell in love with the beauty of that girl. But a demon sat in the middle of the celestial without the knowledge of others. Thirumaal without noticing gave three wooden ladles of elixir to the demon who sat among the celestials.

“படைத்திட்ட பெருமாலாம் பெண்ணி நோடு

adaiththitta agappaiyinaal vettum poathu
avanvaa yaalamurththa maathai kakku naanae.”

The above script says, “Suryan (Sun) and Chandran (Moon), who were near to the Thirumal, showed a gesture to Thirumal that he was giving elixir to demon. Thirumal had cut off demon’s head from his body using the wooden ladle. Hence demon(s) Raagu(head) and Kaethu(body) had become enemies to Suryan and Chandran”.  Demon spitted the remaining elixie when he was cut by the wooden ladle.

“கக்கும்போ தமூர் தமது லிங்கம், போலக்

akkana maesiththipe travaembu naermai
aararivaa rulakaththoa rariyaar kaanae.”

The above script says, “When demon spitted, the elixir fell on the Earth became neem tree. The reason why neem got bitter taste is because it has came from the demon’s (snake) poisonous mouth. If you eat neem regularly then there is no death for you. Like this I ate neem with four Sanakaathi’s (my masters) and attained kaaya siddhi*. Who in the World  knows such a great values of neem?”

*Kaaya Siddhi - 'Kaayam' means body. Siddhi means power that can be attained. Hence kaaya siddhi can be meant as the power of attaining immortal body.

Subtle body

Author: தோழி / Labels:

This is the inner body. Those who posses this subtle body is capable of anything. They can see and hear the things happen in distance. This is not achieved by the physical eye or ear, rather it is made possible by the subtle knowledge.

The subtle body is blended with light. This light is possible because of pure thought, pure word, pure action and so on. Those who posses wiser knowledge is blended with golden light and those who posses greater character is blended with white light.

The subtle body is created from the the internal heat of mooladhara (pelvic pelxus).

Siththars separate their subtle body from the material body and travel to the places they wish. As they return from travelling, they will unite their subtle body with the material body again.

When this subtle body is separated from the material body, then the material body will stop to function. The separation of subtle body is called as the death.

The process of separating the subtle body from one material body and entering it into the other material body is called as “koodu vittu koodu paaithal”, which literally means jumping from one nest (body) to other.

Types of Human

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

Body holds the soul and protects it. This body is called as thoola sareeram (material body). The inner body, which is within the material body is called as sookkuma sareeram (subtle body).

Thoola sareeram..

The use of the Human body is to create intelligence. This human body enjoys various sensations. The duty of the intellectual is to identify the permanent feelings by analysing the permanent and temporary feelings of human sensations.

Siththars categorize the Humans into three types.

Sagalar: Those who gained knowledge of body.

Piralayaagalar: Those who have thought about celestials when they were alive and had become celestial thyselves after their death.

Vingnaanakalar: Those who gained the knowledge of body and capable of attaining subtle body. They could be alive even after leaving their body. Those who attains this ability are called as vingnaanakalar by Siththars.

This material body grows by the consumption of food. This body doesn’t have any permanent characteristic or knowledge. Because of ignorance, many of us consider this impermanence of the body as “myself”.

But in reality, subtle body is the immortal one.

In the next post we will see about the subtle body.

Kundalini energy

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Kundam means the place where things are stored safely. The energy which stays at kundam and attains layam (to become oneness)  is called as Kundalini. Kundalini is the energy which holds the Human body. Kundalini is coiled up between the urinary hole and anus. This spot is referred as mooladhara (pelvic plexus).

Siththars attained ashta maha siddhis by awakening Kundalini energy. Yogi attain divine experience by yogic practices and hence yogi knows hidden secrets.

Kundalini resides as the feature of Goddess (Shakthi) and the feature of God (Shiva) resides in the top of the head. The real bliss occurs when kundalini energy raises to the top of the head. In many of their songs, Siththars have mentioned their experience about this bliss.

Kundalini energy is the reason for the varying talents got by each individual. Yogis and Siththars have raised this energy completely towards the top of the head. It is also one of the reason why they are capable of doing miracles.

How Siththars protected their body from mortality?

Author: தோழி / Labels:

In kundalini yoga, when the Yogi raises the internal heat in the nerve-plexus upwards through suzhimunai mummandalam* (three zones) will also grow simultaneously. After mummandalam have grown completely, human body won’t get destroyed till the end of the Earth, says Thirumoolar

“கொண்ட விரதம் குறையாமல் தான் ஒன்றித்
konda viratham kuraiyaamal thaan onri
thandudan oadi thalaipatta yogikku
mandalam moonrinum okka valarnthapin
pindamum oozhi piriyaathu irukkumae.”

(Thirumoolar)

“To get rid of mukkunam* (three qualities), the darkness, the gas named abaanan in mooladhara (pelvic plexus) should be raised and the right side sooriya kalai should be synchronized with left side santhira kalai. If you practice like this for 24 minutes daily in the morning, Lord Shiva will bless you with immortality” says Thirumoolar.

Hence it is clear from Thirumoolar’s words that Siththars lived for many years.

*Mummandalam - Akkini mandalam, sooriya mandalam, santhira mandalam
*Mukkunam - Thaamasam, Rajaasam, Sathveegam

(Thirumoolar)

“Moola naadi” is refferred to suzhumunai*. This is the primary naadi to all the 72000 naadis in the human body. The room at the peak of the suzhumunai is located at the utmost top of the head. There is a gateway for four types of  wisdom*. If the mind becomes united with the centre of those wisdoms, one can vision the vast eternal space of truth, wisdom and bliss. After perceiving that vision, then there is no fear for Yama, the Lord of death, which literally means there is no death.

*Four types of Wisdom:- Wisdom through eye, ear, nose and tongue.
*Suzhimunai - a principal tubular vessel run through the back bone.

The above script says, “Place the purified mercury in stove and add the extract of manjanaathi (Morinda citrifolia). If you heat it , mercury will change as Rasamani in 48 minutes.”
These are the easiest methods to prepare Rasamani.

There is one more important thing to reveal about Rasamani. In genreal, there are many fake Rasamanis available in the market. Then how to find whether the Rasamani is real or not? Siththars have said a solution for this too.

In the next post we will see how to identify that Rasamani is real.

Methods to purify Mercury

 “ஆகாத கன்மச மகற்ற முறை(மை) கேளு
aagasa kanmasa magatra murai(mai) kaelu
vaagaana kalluppu maattu samapaagan
thaagaana kumarippoo saaroru moonru naal
paagaai kazhuvi pathanamaai vaangida.”

The above script says, “Listen. There is a method to remove the wastes from mercury. Take the crystalline salt equivalent to mercury and mix with the extract of kumari (Aloe barbadensis). Grind it with mercury for three days and take the purified mercury by cleansing it.”

This is one of the easiest way to remove defects and malignancies from mercury said by Thirumoolar. Konganavar too mentioned the same method to purify the mercury.

“உப்பது பலமும் நாலு
uppathu palamum naalu
uyarnthi dumsootham ettu
kappathu kalva thittu
kalanthu vaarkumari saaru
seppathu yaraiyappaa yappaa
siranthudan moonru naal thaan
appuya kanja thosham
aaron rumpoagum paarae”.

(Konganavar)

Konganavars’ script says, “Take four palam* (140 gram) quantity of salt, mercury, extract of kumari (Aloe barbadensis) and grind it in kalvam* for three days. You can see that seven malignancies would have been removed.”

In next post we can see how to build Rasamani using this purified mercury.

*palam - 35 gram
*kalvam - It is kind of a roller, which was made out of stone, used by Siththars for grinding.

Defects and malignancies in Mercury

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

Siththars have said that there are eight types of malignancies and seven types of sattai (dust) in the mercury.

“உண்டீனங் கெளடில்யம் ஓதும நவர்த்தம்
 undeenang koudilyam oathuma navarththam
sandathvam pangoadu sangaaram - vinda
palusaarsa malathvam pannusavi shathvam
vilumen rasathoadam vaeru.”

In the above script, it has been said that undeenam, koudilyam, anavarththam, sangaaram, sandathvam, panguthvam, samalathvam, sabishthavam are the eight types of malignance.

The mineral dusts mixed with the mercury was called as sattai by Siththars. The seven types of sattai are naagam, vangam, akkini, malam, vidam, kiri and sabalam.

Therefore, it is clear that Mercury can't be used in it's original form. We have to purify it before using. How to purify the mercury? The purification of mercury is the process of eliminating defects and malignancies from it.

In the next post we can see the easy ways of mercury purification said by the Siththars.

Types and qualities of Mercury

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Rasam:- It denotes the pure mercury. It is in pale reddish colour. It has no defects.

Rasenthiran:- It is black in colour. This too has no defects.

Paaratham:- The colour of this mercury is like silver. It has defects. Only if its defects were purified, we can use it for preparing Rasamani. This is also available in general shops.

Sootham:- It is whitish yellow in colour. It has both defects and malignancy. This too has to be purified.

Misaragam:- It is low grade mercury. This too has both defects and malignancy. This too has to be purified. This is also available in general shops.

What is meant by defects and malignancy in mercury? Is it possible for us to purify it? Is the purifying process simple? Yes, ofcourse. Siththars have described easy ways for it.

In the next post, we can see this in detail.

Mercury used to prepare Rasamani

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

Kaaram, sootham, punniyam, karpam, saamam, vinneer, vinmarunthu, rasam were given as the names for mercury by Siththars. We could know it from the following script of Siththar in which they have coined mercury with secret notations.

 “காரமே சூதம்புண்யம் கற்பமாஞ் சாமஞ் சத்து
 kaaramae soothampunyam karpamaa(nj) saama(nj) saththu
sooriyapa kaiyaa(nj) saathiru ththiran thulliyeesan
veerya (nj)soozhchineeraam vinneer vinma runhthu
seerperu miratha menru seppi naarrop pillarae.”

There are many scripts in which Siththars have praised about the mercury. The great Siththar Bogar, in his book Sapthakaandam, said about the five types of mercury.

“ஆறியே சூதமஃ தை ந்துவித மாகும்
athan vibara maethenni laraiyak kaelu
ooriyae rasamenrum rasaenh thiramenrum
utrapaa rasamenrum soothamenrum
meeriyae misara kamen rainhthu maachchu.”

“Let me say about the five types of mercury. Listen. They are rasam, rasenthiran, paaratham, sootham, misaragam” said Bogar. Bogar had categorized mercury into five types depending upon the qualities of the mercury.

We will see about the qualities of the mercury in our next post.

What is Rasamani?

Mercury, a liquid metal, is one of the natural ore available from the Earth. It is made up of air and fluidity.

Generally we might have seen mercury in white colour. But they are available in red, yellow and pale blue colours. But these colour mercuries are rare varieties. According to Vaadha vaithiyam*, these rare mercuries are considered as one of the arsenic types. Since it consists of arsenic characteristics, Siththars also called it as “soodham”.

Mercury is used in many ways as rasa pathangam, rasa patpam, rasa sendhooram for medicinal purposes. When it is made into a hard solid ball, it is known as Rasamani*. The transformation of mercury into rasamani is just a part of alchemy. The process of separating fluid and air from mercury was secretly maintained and also kept as a secret. If we wear this Rasamani, it gives us more benefits. It helps to cure the paralysis, phlegm, bile and keeps the body function properly.'

Rasamani, naturally, have the grasping power and it absorbs the power of any material and reflects it. Hence people who wish to attain wisdom through the yogic way use Rasamani.

Mercury which posses many qualities and it gives us benefits in the way how we make the Rasamani. Siththars had said many methods to make the mercury into rasamani. The methods differ from easy level to hard level depending upon the Guru’s preaching. Siththars conveyed their experience of making the Rasamani to the people for their benefits.

How to make the Rasamani which has many benefits?

*Rasamani - solid mercury balls
*Vaadha vaithiyam - A medical practice used to heal diseases using Alchemy.

Ramalinga Adigal wished to build a temple in Vadalur. A flagstaff was needed for that sathya gnana sabai. Ramalinga Adigal asked few devotees, who supervised the construction of the temple, to go to Chennai to buy a tree for flagstaff. Devotees went to Chennai by train. Before they reached that place in Chennai, Ramalinga Adigal was there. Ramalinga Adigal, himself selected a tree and standing on top it, he said, “This one is good for flagstaff”.

He was able to do this miracle as he had attained eight mystical powers

In next posts, we will see what Siththars said about the Rasamani*.

Unravelling the grievances of people

As Idaikaadar was expert in medical yoga, he was also expert in astrology and astronomy. Once he fore predicted a severe famine and said to the people. Since people ignored him considering his prediction as the words of lunatic, they suffered at the time of famine. Their farm animals were dead in hunger. But the goats of Idaikaadar survived as Idaikaadar practised his goats to eat the leaves of madar plants. Madar plants are capable of flourishing even in severe famine.

Idaikaadar, as he was aware of famine, built his house using clay mixed with a larger proportion of grain ‘Kuruvaragu’. Since goats of the Idaikaadar consumed the leaves of madar plants, they felt itching. As goats suffered in itching, they rubbed their body in the walls of Idaikaadar’s house. The grains mixed with clay started to crumble from the walls. Idaikaadar collected those grains and gave it to people and helped them to survive.

This very incident shows that Siththars would unravel the grievances of the people even if they were blamed or ignored.

A golden coin for each step

Once Karuvoorar, also called as Karuvoor Devar, had went to Nelveli (Thirunelveli). Since he wished to see Nelliyappar, he went to the temple. He called the God as, “Nellaiyappa” for three times. Since that was the time for nivethanam*, Karuvoorar didn’t get any reply from the other side. Karuvoorar smiled, “Aah.. it seems Nellaiyappan is not here?”. As he smiled, madar plants and unwanted plants started to grow around the temple.

Without wasting a second, Karuvoorar left the temple. Lord Siva (Nelliyappar) was quivered by Karuvoorar’s anger. When Karuvoorar reached Manoor, Lord Siva obstructed him. He said, in a convincing tone, “Son, being so angry like this, is not good. When you visited me, it was Nivethanam time. Though I heard you, I was not able to reply you”. He called Karuvoorar pleasantly, “Ok. Let it be. Come to Thirunelveli”.

Appeased Karuvoorar, walked towards Thirunelveli. Lord Siva offered him a golden coin for Karuvoorar’s each step towards Thirunelveli.

*Nivethanam - The practice of offering food to the deity.

Ones’s deed will burn thyself

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Pattinaththar, after his renunciation, lived by begging for alms. The relatives of Pattinaththar were worried about their caste pride. One day, in anger, relatives of Pattinaththar poisoned the appam* and offered him to eat.

Pattinaththar, with his mystical wisdom, realised the truth and didn’t eat that appam. While Pattinaththar was saying the following verse, he just thrown the Appam into the rooftop of the relative’s house who poisoned him.

“தன்வினை தன்னைச்சுடும்,
thanvinai thannaisudum,
ottappam veettai sudum”

One’s deed will burn thyself,
Appam in the rooftop will burn the house

As he said the verse, his relative's house started to burn..

This was the first miracle which made the World to know about Pattinathar’s conceit.

*Appam - a flat round cake of rice flour and jaggery fried in oil

Siththars and mystics

Author: தோழி / Labels:

Siththars were capable of doing mystics, but it was not their intention. It was just a part of their journey and it holds only a small space in their achievements.

Siththars can make and bring materials which are different from the magic and tantra of the fakes. Siththars are omnipotent and they could get anything done as they desire. They could also bring the living beings whenever they wish. They could even give life to the dead by their mystical powers.

The mystical actions, which might seem as miracle to us, are just petty performances of their powers for the Siththars.

In next posts, we will see some miracles done by Siththars.

Men can live forever

Author: தோழி / Labels:

If all the Worldly desires are referred as the carnal pleasures, then what is the real bliss?

Siththars have answer for this too. When one can fuse his soul with God, he can attain an endless bliss. To achieve this endless bliss, Pattinaththar says, one has to become immortal.

"பிறவாதிருக்க வரம் தரவேண்டும்; பிறந்துவிட்டால்
piravaathirukka varam tharavendum; piranthuvittal
iravaa thirukka marunthundu kaan ithu eppadiyo
aramaar pugazhthillai amabalavaanar adikkamalam
maravaa thirumaname! athukaan nal marunthunakke..!”

Pattinaththar, in the above song, highlights an important point. One who is born could live forever without mortality by using a special medicine. From this we can clearly understand how Siththars live with their subtle body.
