Bogar and Kathirkaamam!

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

Kathirkaamam is a place situated in the south east corner of Srilanka. Many books cited this place as one of the six primal homes (arupadai veedu) of Lord Muruga. Sage Arunagirinaathar also sung 16 songs on Lord Muruga  of kathirkaamam in his thirupukazh. It is said to be tha, this temple belongs to 11th century.

mani tharalam veesi, ani arivi soozha,
maruvu kathirkaamap perumaal kaan!
aravu pirai vaari, viravu sadai vaeni
amalar kuru naathap perumaal kaan!

(Arunakirinaathar)

This temple is situated near manik ganga river in place called Tissamaharama in the Hambantota district. It may be a startling news, that Tamil god’s temple is still has its place among Sinhala people without any impediment.

This temple is common to Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists and all functions were celebrated without any demarcation. Here, the person performing pooja ties his mouth with cloth and no mantra chanting is seen here. The person who performs pooja is commonly called “Kappuraalai”.

More astonishing thing is there is no idol for Lord Muruga. The cloth which is painted with Lord Muruga along with Malli and Devyanai is dangled down and all poojas are performed for this hanging painted cloth.

Then, what is behind this hanging cloth? This is our aim of this post…

There is small room behind this curtain and no one is allowed to enter that room other than temple priest. The room without any lightings and ventilations has one box which contains the hexagonal yantra. This yantra has its own mystic power and information in temple shows that this temple is formed by Bogar. Moreover, the navapaashana combination which is used for making Palani Dhandaayuthapaani idol is used for this yantra preparation also. The image of this yantra is shown below,

This yantra is correlated to Kathirkaama Kandhan (one of the names of Lord Muruga) and worshipped by all people irrespective of their religion. During festive season, this box having yantra is placed over elephant and allowed to go around the street. Moreover, it is heard that, Bogar attained and make his samadhi near to temple itself.

Some explanations on Navapaashaanam..

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

The treasure taken out from the “Padmanaba swami temple” of Trivandrum, Kerala has gained the attention of over all people from the World. However, similar information is available in Siththar’s poems too, which I palnned to share from today.

 But...

Thiru. Vaanavan yogi putforth his adimration as well as criticization on the original Tamil post concerning Pancha Paashaana Lingam. Although, I answered him in that comment column itself, I thought it is necessary to give clarification in this regard with respect to his certain criticized comments.

He stated that, “only the ignorant fellows will tell that, Nava Baashaanam is combination of nine  paashaanam” in the comment column.

Despite of the pandits knowledge of Nava Paashaanam, let us see the enlightening view of Siththars, who born among the normal people and attained this eternal state. All the information shared here are collected from following books; Bogar Nikandu, Bogar Vaithiya Kaaviyam, Bogar 7000 and Pulipaani Poojavithi 116.

In the following poem, Bogar stated the reason of Nava Paashaanam making to his student Pulipaani Siththar;

mannaana thaekamathu irunthumenna
makithalaththil nedungaalam vaaznthumenna
vannamudan kaliyukaththil aniyaayangal
vaakudanae sathaakaalam nadakkumpaaru
nadakkavae kaliyukaththaar pizaikkavaendi
naamaana manoanmaniyaal kirupaiyaalae
ullapadi paadaanam onpathumthaan
urukkich saaiththaen silaiyaaiththaanae.

(Bogar)

As, most of the happenings are going to be impious in this Kali yugam, and it is no use for human body to live long in the Earth. Bogar prepared statue made up of nine baashaanam with the blessing from goddess Manoanmani, for the survival of people.  Here, the specified nine paashaanam referring to what? I left it to reader’s view.

Let us see the another poem of Pulipaani Siththar:

பாரப்பா மலையதுவின் உச்சியிலே
paarappaa malaiyathuvin uchchiyilae
paangaana Bogaruda samaathiyarukae
kattaana paadaanavakai ettudanonru
kaanavae saerththuvaartha silaithaaanum
nannavae pirathittaithaan seithu
naviluvaen poosaisoae dasamunjeyya
aatrinaen poosaivithikal thaanum
aarappaa arivaarka laarumillai.

- புலிப்பாணிச் சித்தர் ( Pulippaani Siththar)

Pulipaani says that the statue made up combination of eight paashanam and one other form is positioned nearby the Bogar samadhi on the tip of hill. And he continues that no one is capable of performing pooja for that statue and henceforth Pulipaani sithar sharing information regarding the pooja procedure and rules to perform it. Here, the specified nine paashaanam refers to what? I left it to reader’s view.

Let us see the another poem given by Bogar;

"பாங்கான பாடாணம் ஒன்பதினும்
paangaana paadaanam onpathinum
parivaana viparamthaan sollak kaelu
gowri kenthicheelaimaal devi
kodu veeramkachhaal vellai
pakarkinra thottinodu soothamsangu
pooranamaai niraintha sivasakthi
nalamaana manoanmani kadaatchaththaalae
nanninee onpathaiyum kattukattu”

(Bogar)

Bogar listed the nine paashaanam as gowri paashaanam, kenthakap paashaanam, seelaip paashaanam, veerap paashaanam, kachaalap paashaanam, vellaip paashaanm, thottip paashaanam, soothap paashaanam, sangup paashaanam and one should bundle up the combination of above nine with the blessings and permission from the Siva Sakthi and goddess Manoanmani. How to call the above nine combiantion? I left it to your choice.

Still I can show some poems as example. However, this post is just the outcome of the commented statement “ignorant people” and nothing beyond that. Kindly do not misunderstand the post.

Further, I would like to thank Thiru. Vaanavan yogi for making this chance to verify about paashanams and I dedicate this post to him.

Pancha Paashana Lingam

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

In the previous post, we have seen the purification process of paashaanam. As this is the tedious stage and one can easily proceed with the further steps if succeeded in this purification process. However, the major loss in weight of each paashaanam during purification cannot be controlled. As the total weight before purification is 500 grams where, the total weight comes around 300 grams after purification which is further used for bundling process.

Now the next step is obtaining kuzhambu* from the purified baashaanam. Modern chemistry gives two ways for liquefying the solid substance. One is melting and another one is dissolving the solid in liquid medium to obtain solution.

While Bogar quoted the following method to obtain the solution from paashaanam;

"கண்டுபார் பாடாணக் குழம்பதனை
kandupaar paadaanak kuzhampathanai
kanamaana sathurakkal lippaalirpoattu
vindupaar saamanthaan moodivaikka
vidupatta suththasalam poalaeyaakum
kondupaar sirappaana paadaananthaan
kodithaana ayachchattik kullaevaiththu
mandupaar naarsaamam surukkuppoada
makaththaana paadaanam kuzhambaamae."

(Bogar)

Placing the paashaanam in the square cactus milk and place it for a saamam* by closing it resulting in the liquefied paashaanam. Then, it is placed in iron container and by condensing it for 4 saamam. Finally, we will get the desired solution of paashaanam.

I adopted above method to get the solution of 5 paashaanam individually. Then, after measuring the accurate weight, I took the equal amount in every 5 to get the desired solution kuzhambu.

Now the final process is pouring the solution in structured mould. I bought this mould from chetti street in Colombo - 11. It happened to be lot and lots of divine moulds there, for which I confused and finally bought mould of lord Shiva in linga form.

As I poured the mixture solution in mould and place it in sunlight (Surya pudam), it get hardened. Finally, the “Pancha Paashaana Lingam” is ready and can be seen in the below picture, which took 2 months to prepare. Eventhough the size is small; it contains unbounded glory with in it.

It can be placed in home for worshipping. However, if prepared in big size, it can be used in temple. Even though most of our temples principal statues are of this paashaana type, but the forgotten or hidden information fades the glory of the temples.

The belief of obtaining cure on worshipping specific lord in specific place is all due to this type of statues. The information like abisheka water, milk from the principal statue can cure the disease gets modified over time and becomes the culture and tradition nowadays which are also fading gradually.

In that series, we can worship the above “Pancha Paashaana Lingam” and can perform abishekam daily. Uroma rishi told that, the continuous intake of abisheka water stables the paralysis, bile and phlegm as it has plenteous medicinal property, there will not be occurrence of any disease and can live long.

Irrespective of gender, it can be worshipped by both male and female. Bogar told that,  placing the statue in pure and neat place and by chanting the mantra “Om Namasivaaya” , results in mind peace and focus.

Purification of Paashanam – Cont. of a Practical Experience

Author: தோழி / Labels: ,

First step in this procedure is to remove the poisonous property in paashaanam through purification process. This is the time taking as well as tedious job to handle and cannot be over anxious. To get the desired result, it is necessary to follow the popular proverb, ‘patience is a virtue’. So, it finally took two whole months to complete the entire purification process.

The clear explanation of purification process is obtained from “Uroma Rishi Maruththuva Vaakadam”, written by Roma rishi and I adopted his procedure in my practical realization.

"ஆமப்பா இன்னமொரு கருவைக் கேளு
aamappaa innamoru karuvaik kaelu
aathiyenra pasaananj suththi solvaen
saamappaal orukalasan thannil vaangi
karuvaana pooranmum pooranj serththu
thaamappaa kuruvathanaik karaithu nalla
tharuvaana paasaanan thannai vaangi
poamappaa thoalaanthira maakak kattip
pooranamaanj salanththanilae thookki daayae
thookkiduvaai neervatra eriththu nalla
suththamulla paasaanj suththiyaamae”

(Maruththuva vaakadam)

Let us see the purification process of each paashaanam.

The apirakap paashaanam is placed in lemon according to its quantity. Then, if we do pudam, we will get the purified paashanam.. Hence, for this purification process considerable amount of lemon is required according to the need.

For kar baashaanam purification, equal amount of neem seed milk and milk of yarcum is mixed with kar paashanam and condensed. Care should be taken regarding the accuracy of milk proportion in this  process.

Now the soothap paashaanam is immersed in milk of white yarcum for a day followed by immersing it in lemon juice for a day. Now it is washed with vinegar and dried. Then, drill the root of merukkan, inserting the paashaanm in it and close with its own root. Now make the layer of cow dung over that root and do pudam. Then it is cooled to get the purified paashaanam which is one of the time consuming job also, requires lot of patience.

First cover the thuththap paashanam in cloth and make small hole in lime stone and insert the thuththa paashaanm in it. Cover the entire hole using lemon stone itself. Now boil the above with palmyra toddy for 1 saamam* using 2 type of twigs for burning. Finally we get the purified thuththap paashaanam. Accurate timing and medium fire should be noted during this process.

On one earthen vessel, vinegar, lemon juice and extract of hibiscus cannabinus is added in equal amount. Along with this, the seelai paashaanam is tied in silk cloth and allowed to condense in medium fire to get the purified paashaanam.

It almost takes complete 2 months for finishing the entire purification process. Next step is making kuzhambu* from the above and allowed to set in mold to achieve the desired paashaanak kattu.

As I have no idea of uploading or sharing this information here in internet while doing this purification process, I did not take any pictures. However, in the next post I will definitely show you the picture of Pancha paashana lingam, a successful outcome of my first practical research work

Stay tuned!!

Paashaanak Kattu – A Practical Experience!

Author: தோழி / Labels:

During October 2010, I wrote this post which kindles my inner interest and becomes the starting point of my practical research. As I was fed up with merely sharing the notes taken from the books I read, I planned to start the practical work in this regard. Definitely this post is not an idea of boosting me out. It is just an outcome of my curious research work.

From the older posts, we learned that, paashaanam is of two types and are highly poisonous forms. Interested readers can refresh the concepts in the concerned older posts.

Siththar’s removed the poisonous property of paashaanam and used the purified form for their medicinal preparations. Even the scientific technology also uses the poisonal foms in day today medicine. Thus, purifying the different type of paashaanam and the process of combining these poison free forms is called paashaanak kattu. The so formed, ‘paashaana kattu’ is full of ample medicinal properties.

As we all know, the principal statue of “Lord Dhandaayuthapaani” in Palani is made up of combined bundle of nine forms of Paashaanam. The abisheka* water of that statue possesses plenteous medicinal values. However, no abisheka is performed for that statue, since most of the backside of the statue is scratched out for its medicinal value.

Due to my curiosity on practical realization of paashaana kattu, I asked permission from my guru first on October 2010, which I got approved on end of May 2011 (this post was originally written on July 2011). In between these deeds, my exams got over and the next crisis started. It was really a big challenge to get permission from my beloved mother. Of course! She has reasons to stop me from handling these poisonous materials. As my mother happened to see the paashaana pudam perfomed by my beloved grandfather and also aware of the poisonous gas emitted during the paashaana pudam which make the performer unconscious. Hence she precluding me from this practice.

As I have to convince my mother to proceed further, I showed and described her, the structure and performance of Face gas mask, which I happened to use during my practical sessions in my medicine classes. As I somehow convinced my lovable mother, I started to gather concerned information. As we already discussed that, paashaanam is of two types; piravi baashaanam, which occurs naturally and Vaippu paashaanm, which occurs artificially and also has practical difficulty in obtaining this artificial one. I have chosen to use natural one rather than artificial. However, confusions continue here too! As there are 32 naturally available paashaanam, among which I have to choose the best for my research.
For this, the information arrived on-hand from book named “Uromarishi Maruthuva Vaakadam”. There, best five paashaanam for statue making is quoted through which I came to conclusion of using 5 paashaanam in my work.

The five paashaanam I have used are;

Apirakap paashaanam
Kar paashaanam
Soodha paashanam
Thuththap paashanam
Seelaip paashaanam

Among these, I easily got soodha paashaanam and thuththap paashaanam from my college lab with supervisor’s cordial permission. However, collecting the rest of the three is really a tedious job and got frozen. With guru’s blessings I got kar paashaanam from my friend in mattakalappai.

I got apirakap paashaanam and seelai paashaanm from store where, apirakap paashaanam costs around Rs. 60/g and seelaip paashaanam costs Rs. 54/g.  As I need 100 grams in each one of the above and this costs around Rs. 11,400. Ofcourse! This is because I froze.

Cheers! Finally, I collected all the five natural piravip paashaanam. Now, each one of these should be purified so as to remove the poisonous property. Then, kuzhambu* must be gathered from each of the above separately and the equivalent amounts of the above five are mixed together. This mixture is then allowed to set on the desired mold to prepare the paashaana kattu.

I have told the procedure very easily. Let us see the practical realization in the next post.

Stay tuned!

*Abisheka – bathing of an idol with water, oil, milk, etc,.
*Kuzhambu – the liquid of thick consistency (such as sandal paste)

The Paashana forest in the Sathuragiri Mountain

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

The nature God has given all the features that the Siththars require both internally and externally for their search and hence the Sathuragiri Mountain is considered as the head quarters of the Siththars. In the past twenty three posts we have seen all about the Siththars, their ashrams, caves, the way to reach that caves, the streams on the way, rivers, forests, herbs in those forests, udhaga water, fountains and temples.

We shall see about the one that we left to see in that sequence. The important ingredient that we use in the preparation of the alchemy and in the siddha medicine is the paashanam (arsenics). It is an element which is as strong as metal, and is as intense as poison. To know more information about it, you can read my previous post, ‘What is Paashanam?’.

This paashanam can be categorized into two major types. They are piravip paashanam and vaippup paashanam. The piravi paashanam can be found in nature. There is a story that the statue of Lord Muruga present in Pazhani which is made out of navapaashanam has been made in Sathuragiri Mountain only.  But there is no information regarding this in the songs of the Siththars.

If that statue has been made in the Sathuragiri Mountain then all those paashanam has to be present here. While searching for answers to these questions in the songs of Agathiyar and Bogar, I found certain rare information. Yes paashanam is there in the Sathuragiri Mountain. We shall see that it is present in the Sathuragiri Mountain in the words of Agathiyar.

"பெருமையாம் சதுரகிரி வளப்பஞ்சொல்வேன்
Pperumaiyaam Sathuragiri valappanjsolvaen
nutpamudan Pulasthiyanae punithavaanae

paalaganae Sathuragiri valappameththa
laesaana kaattagaththae thirinthukandaen
sangamudan Sathuragiri kizakkaeyappaa

pattayampoal sunaiyundu thoappumundu
paalaganae kandaen yaavungkandaen”

(Agathiyar)

“I have gone around the entire world and have seen the Sathuragiri Mountain also. In the eastern side of the Sathuragiri Mountain at the way which can be easily entered, I found paashanam” says Agathiyar. Calcium will be seen in abundance at this land of the forest. He says that there is fountain and garden at the middle of the forest. In the following songs he says about the various kinds of paashanams and their uses.

Isn’t it interesting fact? The land at the forest in the eastern side of the Sathuragiri mountain has abundance of calcium. The one who is interested or the researchers can involve in further researches.

I shall complete this series of Sathuragiri Mountain with the next post.

Vaippup paashanam!!

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

Bogar in his book "Bogar 12000" has wrote about two types of paashanams. The first category of paashanam is "Piravip paashanam" and the other is "Vaippup paashanam".

Vaippu is a method which is used in the siddha medicine and alchemy. According to this, the low level metals, or things can be converted to a higher level of things. In other words, we can say that the naturally found materials can be converted into artificial ones. Such vaippu paashanam which are formed in this way have been used by the Siththars. Bogar has mentioned about 32 types of such paashanams.

They are,

Puthoatti vaippup paashanam
Pon thotti vaippup paashanam
Sepputh thotti vaippup paashanam
Indira vaippup paashanam
Naaga vaippup paashanam
Ilavana vaippup paashanam
Kaasu vaippup paashanam
Soara vaippup paashanam
Kenthaga vaippup paashanam
Neela vaippup paashanam
Sootha vaippup paashanam
Thaila vaippup paashanam
Irasidha vaippup paashanam
Kunguma vaippup paashanam
Thuththa vaippup paashanam
Thurusu vaippup paashanam
Iraththa vaippup paashanam
Panjapatchi vaippup paashanam
Koada soori vaippup paashanam
Pavalap putru vaippup paashanam
Aridhaara vaippup paashanam
Vaaranakendhi vaippup paashanam
Kozhiththalai kanthi vaippup paashanam
Yerumainath thotti vaippup paashanam
Savveera vaippup paashanam
Vellai vaippup paashanam
Theemurugal vaippup paashanam
Karumugil vaippup paashanam
Saathilingam vaippup paashanam
Miruthaarsingi vaippup paashanam
Iraththasingi vaippup paashanam
Aemasingi vaippup paashanam

Practically only few of them can be prepared. All the methods of preparation are written in a hidden manner in the songs. This method can be achieved successfully under the guidance of a guru. There are still certain rare methods of preparing the paashanams.

But these methods have been hidden with their hereditary itself and getting destroyed. The vaippup paashanam is not a story or imagination. A chemistry that has been evolved with proper planning. If we try to implement them in a correct way, then we can retain that particular method. Many things that the modern science is struggling to achieve has been used by the Siththars in those days only. It is the responsibility and duty of every Tamilian to attempt to retain these methods that are disappearing.

In the post I shall catch up with a entirely new topic.

What is Piravip paashanam?

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

Bogar has very clearly told about the paashanam, its nature, form, capability, types and their uses in the book "Bogar 12000".  As this has been told with hidden meaning, the researches has got  many difference of opinion among themselves. Identifying the meaning of those which is written in hidden meaning is a kind of art only. I shall try writing about it as a separate post only.

Bogar has classified these paashanams mainly into two categories. They are "Piravip paashanam" and "Vaippup paashanam". The Piravi paashanam are found in nature only. He says that there are 32 types of them under this category. We can find them from the various kinds of minerals, herbs, many other living organisms also in various forms.

Now let us see the list of 32 kinds of paashanams.

Kartakap paashanam
Vellaip paashanam
Abiragap paashanam
Karamugilp paashanam
Silaa matha paashanam
Seethangap paashanam
Kachchaalap paashanam
Anjanap paashanam
Karp paashanam
Karparip paashanam
Saalangap paashanam
Avupalap paashanam
Silaip paashanam
Thaalagap paashanam
Sara kaandap paashanam
Ilingap paashanam
Kaanthap paashanam
Palandurugap paashanam
Thuththap paashanam
Gowrip paashanam
Sangup paashanam
Kuthiraipparp paashanam
Thottip paashanam
Sirapandhap paashanam
Amirthap paashanam
Thaalambap paashanam
Vaigiranthap paashanam
Veerap paashanam
Kenthagap paashanam
Miruthaarap paashanam
Soothap paashanam
Koalagap paashanam

From their names only we can understand in which form they are present.  Each one of them has got their own unique features. About this also Bogar has written in his book. Among them few of them are in use now-a-days.

On doing further researches, we may get to know about the other paashanams told by Bogar. So I request all of you to involve in making searches to know about them or help those who attempt to know them and help for the welfare of the people.

In the next post we shall see about the other category of paashanam, "Vaippup paashanam".

What is Paashanam?

Author: தோழி / Labels: , ,

Paashanam - arsenics

Paashanam is one among the important materials for the siddha medicine.  When we listen to the word paashanam, the next thing that strikes our mind is the lord who rules the Pazhani mountain, Dhandayuthapaani and Bogar who created him. We have heard that Bogar has made the idol by combining the nine types of paashanams. This post is mainly about the paashanam only.

The Siththars have used these paashanams as an important raw material in their siddha medicine. This has been used in the alchemy also. It is in solid form like metals and has got the poisonous nature of the poison. This paashanam is a general name only, there are many types in it.

These paashanams are poisonous in nature, hence it may lead to death on consuming them. But the Siththars in those days itself has changed its nature and used them as medicines. You might remember about the allopathy method that has converted the snake's poison as medicine after spending a lot of money. This is also a wonder among the many wonders that Siththarss made to the world.

We might have heard many exaggerations about the paashanam. There are many questions and doubts about this that from where these exaggerations arose. Bogar has very clearly told about the paashanam in the book "Bogar 12000". Bogar has classified these paashanams mainly into two categories. They are "Piravi paashanam" and "Vaippu paashanam".

The Piravi paashanam are found in nature only. But the Vaippu paashanam are formed as a result of combining many kinds of metals. There are many other paashanams present under these two categories.

In the next post we shall see about the Piravi paashanam and their types.
