When the people have any diseases
or distress, they would sacrifice animals in the Pidari* temple in the
name of naerthi kadan*. Sivavaakkiyar, who had seen this, condemnly
said, “The God, to which you sacrifice the animals for receiving the
grace, will Herself let your life emaciate and decay. You will be made
as shrew-mouse.”
“தங்கள் தேகம் நோய்பெறின் தனைப்பி டாரி கோவிலில்
thangal thaegam noayperin thanaippi daari koavilil
பொங்கல் வைத்து ஆடுகோழி பூசைப் பலியை இட்டிட
pongal vaiththu aadukoazhi poosai paliyai ittida
நாங்கச் சொல்லும் நலிமிகுந்து நாளும் தேய்ந்து மூஞ்சூறாய்
naanga sollum nalimigunthu naalum thaeynthu moonjoorai
உங்கள் குலதெய்வம் உங்கள் உருக்கு லைப்ப துண்மையே!
ungal kulatheivam ungal urukku laippa thunmaiyae!”
In the above script, Sivavaakkiyar had condemned the sacrificial offering of animals to God.
*Naerthi kadan - offering in fulfilment of a vow made to a deity
*Pidari - a female deity who protects the village. She appears with the protruding tongue and the trident in hand.
