Animals in the Siddha medicine

There are two types of medicines in the Siddha medicine namely, “Agamarundhu” and “Pura marundhu”. Based on the nature and intensity of the disease these medicines are prescribed. It is known that they are of 64 types. All these medicines are done with the help of the natural products.

In this line, the animals, birds, insects were also used as medicines. The horns, body parts, saliva, excretory, bones, oil, skin, tusk, and many other parts can be used as medicines, vasiyam and manthreegam.

Now let us see certain things that have been obtained from various animals.

Kasthoori (Musk-deer)

In the chest of the kavarimaan (roe deer) there is a part named kasthoori, it is preserved and then used.

Korosanai (Bezoar)

The fat like thing present near the liver of the cow is called as Korosanai. This is yellow in color. It is dried and used.

Punugu (Civet)

There are many kinds of cats, one among them is the palm civet. Its sperm is used as punugu.

Savvaadhu

This is also a kind of sperm of a cat only and it will be very sticky and slippery to touch.

Amber

This gets released from the whale that lives in the sea when it undergoes sexual intercourse, this will come floating on to the land. This is taken, dried and used.

There are many things like the oil of peacock, eggs of the birds, body, and the ghee that is obtained from the crocodile, snake’s poison, and saliva of pigeon in the songs of the Siththars. The Siththars have converted them into the required form and utilized them.
