We have found evidences that iron has been used in Tamilnadu before thousand years. In Tamil it is usually called as ‘irumbu’ which was also called as ‘irumponn’ or ‘ayam’. In alchemy, it was considered as the metal of lower quality.
Bogar in his book "Bogar 7000" has told about the nature of the iron in the following way:
"உண்டான தீட்சணமாம் இரும்பு தானும்
undaana theetchanamaam irumbu thaanum
உற்றதோர் ஆவிதம் ஏதுஎன் றாக்கால்
utrathoar aavitham aethuyen raakkaal
கண்டான கரமென்றும் கரஞ்ச மென்றும்
kandaana karamenrum karanja menrum
கடியதோர் ஓநாளம் தாரா பட்டம்
kadiyathoar onaalam thaaraa pattam
பண்டான பரவுந்தான் காள லோகம்
pandaana paravunthaan kaala loagam
பாங்கான கரலோகக் குணத்தைக் கேளு
paangaana karaloagak gunaththaik kaelu"

He says that there are six types of iron. They are kara loagam, karanja loagam, knaala loagam, thaarapatta loagam , pasaara loagam, kaala loagam. He explains in detail about the characteristics and uses of each of them in the following way.
Kara loagam
"பாங்கான கரலோகக் குணத்தைக் கேளு
paangaana karaloagak gunaththaik kaelu
முண்டான பெருறையக் கனமாய்க் காணும்
mundaana peruraiyak kanamaaik kaanum
மொத்தமாய்த்தான் தகடாகும் உடைந்தால் கேளே
moththamaaiththaan thagadaagum udainthaal kaelae
கேளுமேதான் சூதம்பொல் மினுப்புங் காணல்
kaelumaethaan soothampol minuppung kaanal
கெட்டியாக வளைத்தால்தான் வளையா தொடியும்
kettiyaaga valaiththaalthaan valiyaa thodiyum
ஏளுமேதான் இக்குண முண்டான இரும்பு
aelumaethaan ikkuna mundaana irumbu
இசைந்ததோர் கரலோக மென்று பேராம்
isainhthathoar karaloaga menru paeraam"
Kara loagam is very thick. This can be cut as a sheet but cannot be bent. If we attempt to bend, they will break. Those broken pieces will shine like mercury.
Karanja loagam
"வேளுமேதான் வெளுப்பாகி அழுக்க டைந்தால்
vaelumaethaan veluppaaki azhukka dainthaal
வங்கமிக்க கனம்போலேபூமி யில்தான்
vangamikka kanampoalaeboomi yilthaan
நாளுமேதான் பூமாதே வியின்நா தத்தில்
naalumaethaan bhoomaathae viyinnaa thaththil
நலத்துமேதான் தோற்றமதே யாகுந் தானே.
nalaththumaethaan thoatramathae yaagun thaanae.
உற்பத்தி யதைஒடித்தால் சீக்கி ரத்தில்
urpaththi yathaiodiththaal seekki raththil
உடையும்தன் பேர்கரஞ்ச மென்ப தென்க
udaiyumthan paerkaranja menba thenka".
Karanja loagam will be in a color that looks like a mixture of white and dirt color. When we take these iron in hand, we can feel their thickness which is unusual. Also it is easily breakable.
Onaala loagam
"விற்பத்தி வெளுப்போடு கருப்பு மாகி
virpuththi veluppoadu karuppu maaki
மிகவளைச்சல் ஈயம்போல் வளைத லாகி
mikavalaichal eeyampoal valaitha laagi
கற்பத்தி மெத்தவுமே கனமாய்க் காணல்
karpaththi meththavumae kanamaaik kaanal
காய்ச்சினால் குண்டுமணி நிறம்போ லாதல்
kaaichinaal kundumani nirampoa laathal
தற்பத்தி ஓநாள மென்ற லோகம்
tharpaththi oanaala menra loagam
தாராபட்ட டமென்கின்ற லோகந் தானே
thaaraapatta tamenkinra loagan thaanae."
Onaala loagam will be in a color that looks like a mixture of white and black color. It is more flexible to bend like lead. If we take it in hand, we can feel that it is very thick in size. If we melt this, it will turn into the color of the red round seeds of a climbing plant says Bogar.
Thaaraapatta loagam
"தாராபட்ட டமென்கின்ற லோகந் தானே
thaaraapatta tamenkira loagan thaanae
கெழ்கவுமெ ஓநாளக் குணமுமாகும்
kezkavumae onaalak kunamumaagum
கனத்து மேதான் மெழுகூந்து சூட்ச மாகி
kanaththu maethaan mezhukoonthu sootcha maaku
அனமுமான அக்கினிதான் தோற்ற மாகி
anamumaana akkinithaan thoatra maagi
அதிகவெப்பம் சீதளமு மாகக் காணும்
athikaveppam seethalamu maagak kaanum."
It has all the characteristics similar to that of the onaala loagam except that it is found deep inside the ground in the liquid state. Also they turn out to solid if they are taken out from the ground.
Pasaara loagam
"கெட்டியான பாசரமென் றலோகந் தானும்
kettiyaana paasaramen raloagan thaanum
வாழ்க்கவுமே வச்சிரத்தின் சமனாய்க் காணும்
vaazhkkavumae vachiraththin samanaaik kaanum
மயிர்போலே கிற்றுவிழும் மெழுகூர்ந் ததாகும்
mayirpoalae kitruvizhum mezhukoorn thathaagum
பாழ்க்கவுமே பச்சைநிற மாயி ருக்கும்
paazhkkavumae pachainira maayi rukkum"
The pasaara loagam is as hard as diamond. It is very hard too. This can also be melted to make a thin rod. It is green in color says Bogar.
Paara loagam
"பாரமான காளமென்று லோகந் தானும்
paaramaana kaalamenru loagan thaanum
காழ்கவுமே கருப்புமாக நீல வர்ணம்
kaazhkavumae karuppumaaga neela varnam
காய்ச்சினாலே மழமழப்பாய்க் கனமு மாமே
kaaichinaalae mazhamazhappaaik kanamu maamae".
Paara loagam has a got a color which looks like a combination of black and blue. If we melt this it will be very smooth and thick to touch says Bogar.
By using these six types of iron, Bogar has told various methods of preparation of red oxide and many other things. We shall see all those details in another situation.
