In our today’s post we shall see about the copper which were mentioned as sembu, sembonn, seppu, thaamiram. Copper has been widely used in the alchemy. The Siththars have also told about the methods of converting the copper into gold and gold into copper.
Bogar says that copper is a high quality metal than gold and silver. He says that if the gold and silver are compared to body then the copper has to be compared with life. Gold and silver can be used only if a smaller portion of the copper is added to them.
Bogar in one of his song in the book “Bogar 7000” says about the two types of copper in the following way:
"ஆச்சென்ற செம்புதனில் இரண்டு பேதம்
aachenrae sembuthanil irandu paetham
அதன் விரிவு எதெண்றாக்கால் சொல்லக் கேளு
athan virivu ethenraakkaal sollak kaelu
ஓச்சென்ற நேர்பாளம் என்னும் செம்பு
oachenra naerpaalam ennum sembu
உத்தமந்தான் மிகுதியுமென் றறிந்து கொள்ளு
uththamanthaan miguthiyumen rarinthu kollu
மேச்சென்ற மிலேச்சன் தான் என்னும் செம்பு
maechenra milaechan thaan ennum sembu
மிகுதியுந்தான் மத்திபமென் ற்றிந்து கொள்ளு
miguthiyunthaan maththipamen rarinthu kollu
மேச்சென்ற மிலேச்சன் தான் என்னும் செம்பு
maechenra milaechan thaan ennum sembu
மிகுதியுந்தான் மத்திபமென் றறிந்து கொள்ளே
miguthiyunthaan maththipamen rarinthu kollae"
In the song he names out the two types of copper. They are the naerpalam which is of high quality and the milaechan which is of medium quality. Also he says about their characteristics in the following way.
"அறிந்துமேதான் உத்தமத்தின் குணத்தைக் கேளு
arinthumaethaan uththamaththin gunaththaik kaelu
அழுத்தமான மழுங்கலாக பார மாகி
azhuththamaana mazhungalaaga paara maaki
செறிந்துமேதான் சிவப்பாகி அடிக்க அடிக்க
serinthumaethaan sivappaagi adikka adikka
தீர்க்கமாக மிருதுவாய்த்தான் காய்ச்சினாக்கால்
theerkkamaaga miruthuvaaiththaan kaaichinaakkaal
வெறிந்துமேதான் விகாரகுண மில்லா தானால்
verinthumaethaan vigaarakuna millaa thaanaal
மிகுதியுமே உத்தமந்தான் இந்தச் செம்பு
miguthiyumae uththamanhthaan inhthach sembu
மறிந்துமேதான் மத்திபத்தின் குணத்தைக் கேளு
marinthumaethaan maththipaththin gunaththaik kaelu
மகாவெளுப்பு கருப்போடு சிவப்பு மாமே
mahaaveluppu karuppoadu sivappu maamae".
"The high quality copper is very thick, hard and heavy. These are red in color. As we hit them they will become soft. Also if we melt it, it will not spread. This is the naerpaalam. Realize it" says Bogar.
"சிவப்பாகி கடினமாகி உத்தமத் துக்குச்
sivappaagi kadinamaagi uththamath thukkuch
சிதைந்து மேதான் பெரிதாகி இருப்பதாகி
sithainthu maethaan perithaagi iruppathaagi
சிவப்பாகி கழுவவேக ழுவவே தானும்
sivappaagi kazhuvavaega zhuvavae thaanum
ஏற்றமான கருப்பதாக இருப்பதானால்
aetramaana karuppathaaga iruppathaanaal
மிவப்பாகி மிலேச்சமென்ற செம்ப தாகும்
mivappaaki milaechamenra semba thaakum
மிகுதியுமே மத்திபந்தான் இன்னங் கேளு
miguthiyumae maththipanthaan innang kaelu
துவர்ப்பாகி சுரோணிதவண் ணமிக வெளுப்பு
thuvarppaagi suroanithavan namiga veluppu
சுத்தமான கருங் கருப்பு கனமில் லாதே
suththamaana karung karuppu kanamil laathae".
The medium quality copper will be in a color like the combination of the light red and black color. Unlike the high quality copper, this will be in a degenerated state. Also he says that as we melt it the brighter color turns into dark. He also says that it will not be heavy.
