The seeds of the rudraksha tree is taken, washed and dried. Based on their sixes they are categorized for various uses. The size varies based on the temperature, type of tree, age of the tree and the growth of the fruit. Generally the seeds would be in pale black or reddish pale brown.

The outer surface of the rudraksha is uneven but has got strong ups and downs. If we notice them deeply we can find that there would be a line travelling from the top to the bottom. That slit is recognized as the face. Based on the age and growth of these rudraksha, the slits occur. We can find rudrakshas varying from 1 to 21 faces. 95% of the rudrakshas would be possessing 5 to 6 faces only.

The weight of this rudraksha depends based on the depth and the distance between the faces. If the face is closer it would be heavier and if the faces are located far from each other then they would be light weight. This kind of light weighted pearls will float in the water.

A very rare kind of the rudraksha would have two faces attached to each other and would contain no faces on them. This kind of pearls is called as “Gowri Sankar”. The pearls with only face would look like an incompletely grown one. The rudraksha with one, two and three faces would be the most rarest and most powerful kind of rudraksha.

Based on the size of the rudraksha, they are categorized into three. They are gooseberry sized rudraksha, jujube sized pearl and peanut sized pearls. The gooseberry sized rudraksha gives the complete effects, the jujube sized rudraksha causes medium level of effects and the peanut sized pearls gives low level of effects.

Generally these are tied up like a rosary and used. Either thread or metal strips is used to join the rudrakshas. There are various methods to tie up these garlands. These garlands are made with four different counts of the rudrakshas like 1, 27, 54, and 108. While tying them into garlands we should make it a point that all the rudhrakshas contain similar kind of faces. But those who make the garlands for commercial purposes do not note all these points.

While tying them as a garland rudrakshas should not touch to each other.

We shall see about the reason behind this in the next post.
