Agathiyar has categorized the varma kalai into four types. Based on the location of the varmam points in the body and the way of utilizing them he have categorized them as "padu varmam", "thodu varmam", "thattu varmam", "nokku varmam".
Padu varmam
Among the four varma kalai, this is the most dangerous one. If the varma points in the body gets hurt or affected then that varmam is called as “Padu varmam”. As the person who has been hit with this padu varmam, there is a chance of losing their life also. Hence this is considered as the most dangerous one says Agathiyar.
The person who got hit in the padu varma points, will fall unconscious, his mouth will be wide open and the tongue falls out, foam comes out of the mouth and the part where the varmam is located chills out. Agathiyar also says that all can not do it, and only those with expertise can do it.
Thodu varmam
This is also like padu varmam as it happens due to hitting strongly. But still it is not as dangerous as padu varmam. This can be cured quickly.
Thattu varmam
This affects the opponent by just hitting with a single finger, and does not cause much pain to the body.
Nokku varmam
This affects by just seeing at the same place constantly. Agathiyar says that this varmam is also dangerous. He also says that there is no one in this world superior to those who are expertise in this varmam.
Also he has listed out the important varmam points in the body. As per that,
Around the head, there are 37 important varmam points
Around the heart, there are 13 important varmam points
Around the body's front side, there are 15 important varmam points
Around the back side of the body, there are 10 important varmam points
Around the hand's front side, there are 9 important varmam points
Around the hand's back side, there are 8 important varmam points
Around the leg's front side, there are 19 important varmam points
Around the leg's front side, there are 13 important varmam points
Below the shoulder, there are 8 important varmam points.
