Do not think that we are deviating from sharing the details told by the Siththars about homam. While talking about the wonders of the past, if we share about the information about their availability and impact at present, it will add extra flavor to the reading. Isn’t it? Generally the homam are done by putting forth some desires. They might be to satisfy our wants, to get cured from diseases or for the welfare of the society.

Though there is an idea that we can satisfy the god by performing homams, the scientific research is being done to know about the scientific impact of these homams. Due to burning of certain things in the homam, there are certain scientific benefits which are listed out below.

The smoke that is produced from the homam kills the germs that cause diseases to the human, animals and plants. Also the smoke increases the immunity in the human body. It also prevent the water bodies and the food items around the place of homam from getting toxinity. Also the results prove that they reduce the level of carbon di oxide and increase the oxygen levels.

The smoke from the homam combines with the sun light and protects from the adverse effects of the sun rays. The researches related to these are still undergoing. In future we may get interesting facts related to this.

Finally an information, does performing homam cause rain? The answer to these questions always involves debate in it. The artificial rain caused by the modern science is done by pouring the silver iodide or dry ice through the aeroplane. As a result of this only the rain fall occurs. The rain due to the homam has one such reason only. I have collected so much information regarding this. I also have an idea of writing an e-book about it. In that I shall share the scientific reasons about this homam.

Though the homam is something related to the religious beliefs we have seen certain scientific reasons for that in the previous post. Before sharing about the types of homam told by the Siththars, I will share some of the scientific reasons that I know.

We could not imagine a life without light and sound. We can understand how our life would be without these two by seeing our brothers and sisters who are blind and deaf.

The homam is the combination of vibrations from sound and heat from light. This combination causes good to human life and human body. And also science says about the effects caused due to the homam in the surrounding.

The American scientist Dr.Howard Steingull says that while chanting the gayatri mantra, 1,10,000 sound waves are produced per second. He has also mentioned about the effects caused by these sound waves. Like this each mantra produces different kinds of sound vibrations. When these sounds are produced by a group of people, the vibrations caused by them could be realized by the people in that surrounding by experience only.

There are many researches that had put forth the opinion about the impact caused by the smoke of the homam to the people and the atmosphere. The research institute Haffkine Institute for Training, Research and Testing in Mumbai and the founder of the institute Dr. Waldemar Mordecai Haffkine has put forth many results regarding these with evidences.

We do not have the correct information about the time of origin of this kind of practices. But most of the Siththars right from Agathiyar has shared the information about homam in their songs. As I have seen, the information about homam are in the songs of Agathiyar, Thirumoolar, Bogar, Pulipaani, Karuvoorar and Korakkar.

Agathiyar in his book, “Aemathaththuvam” has written about the homam in the following way.

பாரப்பா பார்தனிலே யிருக்குமட்டும்

paarappaa paarthanilae yirukkumattum

பத்திகொண்டு டிசைந்துநீ ஓமஞ்செய்தால்

paththikondu disainthunee oamanjseithaal

நேரப்பா பருதிமதி யுள்ளம் மட்டும்

naerappaa paruthimathi yullam mattum

நீமகனே பூரணமாய் வாழ்வாயப்பா

neemakanae pooranamaai vaazhvaayappaa

காரப்பா நித்தியகர்ம அனுஷ்டானங்கள்

கருணையடன் செய்துகொண்டு கனிவாய்மைந்தா

தேரப்பா சிறப்புடனே ஓமஞ்செய்து

Agathiyar has told about the benefits of doing homam in this song. In the Thirumantra of Thirumoolar, he has told about the homam in the following way.

"ஓமத்திலேயும் ஒருத்தி பொருந்தினாள்

oamaththilaeyum oruththi porunthinaal”

"வின்னா விளம்பிரை மேவிய குண்டத்துச்

vinnaa vilambirai maeviya kundaththuch”

"நாடறிமண்டலம் நலவிக் நலவிக் குண்டத்தும்

naadarimandalam nalavi nalavik kundaththum”

"நின்ற குண்டம் நிலையாறு கோணமாய்

ninra kundam nilaiyaaru koanamaai"

The ancient Tamilians had a practice of burning the left out crops after harvesting. Even today we can witness this kind of practice. But we do not know if there were religious reasons behind this.

But as per the science this kind of practice gives the required strength to the land. The reason of telling this here is that the homam is the smaller form of that burnings done on the huge agricultural lands. Because it has been told that the homam are to be done on the land only.

What are the shapes of the homa kundam*? What are the types? We shall see all the answers for these questions in the next post.

In the upcoming post we shall see about a ritual of velvi*, homam and yagna. In general the word homam means lighting a fire, adding so many things to it and worshipping to god. In the Hindu tradition, this ritual has been in practice from the Vedic period. This way of worship is in practice in other religions also.

In the life of the ancient human the worshipping of Sun was most prominent. After knowing the importance of fire, they have considered it as delegate of the powerful Sun. To protect themselves from fire and to carry their prayers to the view of Sun, people started to use fire as a medium. This is the point where the method of velvi or homam has started. They consider as if they are doing sacrifice to the god, they put certain things, animals or even human beings into the fire and worship to god.

In the Yajur veda we find the information about the 30 kinds of yagnas. Since many ages there has been a tradition where the people of certain community only are supposed to perform these yagnas. There are different kinds of yagnas for each god and each angel. Also the things that we use in the yagnas also varies from god to god. By doing yagnas to a particular god we can satisfy him and get benefits out of it. These opinions are responsible for still keeping this way of worship in practice. 

Though the religious beliefs are on one side, there must be scientific reasons beyond this practice and many researches are being performed to prove. The results of those researches are also being shared. Even on the internet also we can find information related to it. The idea of this post is not to discuss about it.

But to share the information told by the Siththars only I have initiated this post. With further information I shall catch up in the next post.

தாஷிதானில்லையாறும் தனிமூன்றும்ரெண்டும் வீழ்ந்தால்

போச்சப்பா கவலையெல்லாம் போனெதோர் பொருளும்சேரும்

poachappaa kavalaiyellaam poanethoar porulumsaerum

மாஷியாய் வாழ்வாய் நீதான் மக்களை பெற்றுகந்தே

maashiyaai vaazhvaai neethaan makkalai petrukanthae.

For this combination, this indicates that your good days are on your way. You will get wealth and also will be blessed with a kid and attain completeness in your life.

அந்தோவுன் கிரகமெல்லாம் ஆச்சுதுநீசமாக

anthoavun kirakamellaam aachuthuneesamaaga

சந்தோஷம் மழியாமலாகும் தனித்தாறு மிருமுன்றுமானால்

santhosham mazhiyaamalaakum thaniththaaru mirumunrumaanaal

நிந்தைகள் மிகவுண்டாகும் நிஷ்கடூரக்காரனாகும்

ninthaikal mikavundaakum nishkadoorakkaaranaakum

வந்தநோய் வைத்தங்காட்டும் வலிசண்டை பலவுண்டாமே

vanthanoai vaiththangaattum valisandai palavundaamae.

For this combination, it causes bad to you. You will lose the support of your family and get bad name. You will face compulsive fights and greatly affected by the diseases and fights in the family.

புலவித கவலைவேண்டாம் பகர்ந்தாறும் மூன்றாறானால்

pulavitha kavalaivaendaam pagarnthaarum moonraaraanaal

நலமது மிகவேயுண்டு நம்பியதெல்லாம் லாபம்

nalamathu migavaeyundu nambiyathellaam laabam

கலகங் ளொழிந்து போகும் கங்கண ப்ராப்தமாகும்

kalakang lozhinthu poakum kangana praapthamaakum

வலப்பக்க மச்சம்காணும் வர்த்தகம் விர்த்தியாமே

valappakka machamkaanum varththagam virththiyaamae.

For this combination, you need not to bother about your problems anymore. All the problems will be resolved and you will be filled up with happiness. You will get good luck due to the mole on the right side.

6,6,1.

விர்த்தியாய் நிலஞ்செழிக்கும் நீரதுசுரக்கும் கேணி

virththiyaai nilanjezhikkum neerathusurakkum kaeni

தற்போது ஈராறொன்றால் தழைத்துமே செழித்துவாழ்வாய்

tharpoathu eeraaronraal thazhaiththumae sezhiththuvaazvaai

அற்பமாய் நினைத்திடாதே அகஸ்தியா வாக்கியத்தை

arpamaai ninaiththidaathae agasthiyaa vaakkiyaththai

சொற்படி யெல்லாம் நடக்கும் சுடடிராளி முருகன்சாக்ஷி

For this combination, your crop productivity will increase. Do not suspect these words.  Lord Muruga will be proof to this.

சாக்ஷியே சாதிப்பாகும் சங்கடம் மிகவேநேரும்

saakshiyae saathippaakum sagadam mikavaenaerum

சூக்ஷியாய் துரோகம் செய்வர் ஈறாதுமிரண்டும் விழ

sookshiyaai thuroakam seivar eeraathumirandum vizha

மாகடஷிசேர் தொழிலும் போகும் மக்கட்கு பீடைகாட்டும்

maagadashisaer thozilum poakum makkatku peedaikaattum

ஆக்ஷியாய் எல்லாம் நஷ்டம் அகஸ்தியருரைத்தவாக்கே

aakshiyaai ellaam nashtam agasthiyaruraiththavaakkae.

For this combination, all sorrows will come to you. You will be cheated by someone. Your business will face losses. Your family members will get diseases.

வாக்கது தப்பாதப்பா விழுந்த நீராறுமூன்றும்

vakkathu thappaathappaa vizhuntha neeraarumoonrum

போக்கிய தொழிலும் செல்வம் ஜீவனும் வந்துசேரும்

poakkiya thozhilum selvam jeevanum vanthusaerum

பாக்கியம் மிகவும் பெற்று பலவித மேன்மையாவாய்

paakkiyam mikavum petru palavitha maenmaiyaavaai

நோக்குவாய் மூதோர்வாக்கை நம்பி நீ வாழ்குவாயே

noakkuvaai moothoarvaakkai nambi nee vaazhkuvaayae.

For this combination, all the business and property that went away from you will come back to you. Those who went leaving you will come back to you. You will get the good in all the ways and will reach higher levels says Agathiyar.

வாழ்வைக் கெடுக்க வேதான் வங்சகர் கூடஞ்சேரும்

vaazhvaik kedukka vaethaan vangsagar koodanjsaerum

தாழ்வுகள் மிகவேநேரும் தனிவுள மூவாறானால்

thaazhvukal mikavaenaerum thanivula moovaaraanaal

சூழ்வினையாலே உந்தன் செல்வாக்கு மழிந்துபோகும்

soozhvinaiyaalae unthan selvaakku mazhinthupoakum

பாழ்பட கிரகமெல்லாம் பகையாச்சு அஞ்சிடாதே

paazhpada kirakamellaam pakaiyaachu anjidaathae.

For this combination, it indicates that all the planets which were indicating good to you have been changed to bad ones. A bad group of people is waiting to let you fall. You will be pushed into a low level with loss of property. Do not be afraid says Agathiyar.

துஞ்சவே தானியங்கள் துணைவரும் வந்து சேர்வார்

For this combination, all the disease, poverty, bad spirit, famine, enemity that followed you will get vanished. Your land will show growth and crops will result in huge production. You will find new friends which results in huge profits.

பாங்கவே மனையும்மாடும் ஆறுரெண்டொன்றால் லாபம்

ஓங்குமே சிறுவர்கட்கு உயர்தரக் கல்வியெல்லாம்

பாங்குள மனையைவிட்டு பரதேசம் போனபேரும்

தேங்கிடா வந்தேசேர்வார் தீர்ந்திடும் உனது துன்பம்

For this combination, in whatever you do you will lead in profits. The educational knowledge of the children will increase. You will be able to get a house of your own with cattles. Those who left the home due to some reasons will come back with happiness. All your sorrows will be lost.

துன்பமே மிகவுண்டாகும் தொகுத்தாறு மீறிரெண்டால்

thunabamae mikavundaakum thoguththaaru meerirendaal

அன்பு பேரானால் அடுத்துமே பகையுமாவார்

anbu paeraanaal aduththumae pagaiyumaavaar

நன்றி நீ செய்தபோது நலமொன்றும் ஏற்படாது

nanrinee seythapoathu nalamonrum aerpadaathu

தன்மையுமழிந்து போகு தரித்திரனாக்குமாமே

thanmaiyumazhinthu poaku thariththiranaakkumaamae.

For this combination, even your best friends will become enemy. Though you attempt to do something good, it will not end in good. You will lose your character and bad luck comes to you.

உரமுள்ள ஆறும் ரெண்டும் உடனாறும் வீழ்ந்ததப்பா

பரபரப்பதிகமாகும் பாவியென்ற சுவர்கள்

ஆபத்தும் சினேகராலேயாகிவிட மர்க்கமுண்டு

கோபத்தைக் கைக்கொள்ளாதே கொடுமைகள்மிகுமே

kobaththaikkaik kollaathae kodumaikalmikumae

சோபிதம் குறைந்துபாரில் துன்பமும்மிகவுண்டாமே!

For this combination, you will get problems from your friends. But do not get anger. Due to the effects of the planets your character will change worse. You will not get any profits and suffer a lot.

பசுகமது ஒழிந்துபோகும் சொல்மொழி தவறலாகும்

கையதுமிகவே நேரும் பயங்கர நோயுண்டாகும்

kaiyathumikavae naerum payangara noayundaakum

வகையற்று பொருளிழந்து வறுமையால் வாடுவாயே

For this combination, you will face lots of sorrows. The happiness of your family will be lost. Enemity and diseases will occur. You may lose the property.

வாடவே வேண்டாமப்பா வந்தது நல்லகாலம்

vaadavae vaendaamappaa vanthathu nallakaalam

நீடவே மூன்றிரெண்டும் நிஷ்டூர மொழிந்து போகும்

needavaemoonrirendum nishtooramozhinthu oakum

தேடவேபோன ஜீவன் தெற்கெனும் திசையில்கிட்டும்

thaedvaepoana jeevan therkenum thisaiyilkittum

பாடலாமிதனை நம்பி பலன்பெற்று ஜீவிப்பாயே

paadalaamithanai nambi palanpetru jeevippaayae.

For this combination, here after all good will come to you. The life which you went in search will be found in the south direction. Here aft you will lose all your worries and lead a happy life.

3,2,3.

ஜீவிய காலமெல்லாம் வறுமையால் வாடி நின்றாய்

jeeviya kaalamellaam varumaiyaal vaadi ninraai

பாவிகள் சிலபேராலே பலவித பொருளைத் தோற்றாய்

paavikalsila paeraalae palavithaporulaith thoatraai

ஆவியை ஒழிப்பதற்கும் யோசிப்பார் கவனம் வைப்பாய்

aaviyai ozhippatharkum yoasippaar kavanam vaippaai

சேவித்தே ஈசன் தன்னை ஜெகமதில் வாழ்வாய் முன்னே

saeviththae eesan thannai jegamathil vaazhvaai munnae.

For this combination, it indicates your time of difficulty. You will lose your things due to bad people. They may cause danger to your life also. Be careful. Pray to Lord Siva and live a happy life.

3,2,6.

முன்கால வினையிதென்று மூர்க்கமாய் திரியவேண்டாம்

munkaala vinaiyithenru moorkkamaai thiriya vaendaam

உன்காலம் நல்லதாச்சு விழவும் மூன்றிரண்டுமாறும்

unkaalam nallathaachu vizhavum moonrirandumaarum
